Hidy ho people. So, i got that desire to dye my hair another color again. The other color is gone (haircut today took care of what remained), and i decided it was time to do it again. So, i got the bleach and the color (Manic Panic “After Midnight Blue”, which is a navy blue color). Other reasons are, halloween is coming up, so i thought it would be cool for that, and also, because my twin shook his head and gave me a dissapproving look the last time he was here and I said I wanted to dye my hair red, i’m keeping it blue for when he and his wife and kids come out, just to see what he says ;).
But my question is, my hair is already pretty short. I would like to do all over color, but i’m worried about how i’ll avoid dyeing my scalp along with the hair. The shortest hairs are a little over 1/8 th inch long. But, i’m not sure i could get the color on them without getting it on the scalp as well. So, should I just do the longer parts (which would be the top), or is there a way to do all of the hairs?
I will ask my friend David to see if he can help, since i’ve seen him with blue and blonde hair, but i thought i’d ask y’all to get a range of opinions.
Since Manic Panic is a vegetable based dye, I’ve never worried much about getting on my scalp. It does stain the scalp a bit, but not as dark as you’d think. You needent worry about chemical burns and such as long as you don’t have an allergy to it, you should be fine. That said, I use Pillarbox Red on mine, and the scalp stains dissappear with in a washing or two. I guess if your hair is really short, that could look a little odd.
Personally, I’d do just the longer hair now. If you colored the short hairs now, after your hair grows a bit, it’ll look odd having only the end 1/8" with color on it. Plus, it seems like a waste to go through the coloring process only to have so little of your hair getting colored.
'Course, I tend be too practical when it comes to coloring my hair, because it’s not like shaving my hair all off is an option should I not like the results or want a change.
Personally, I like when only the longer hairs are done blue when the person has dark hair to begin with. This gives a contrast. If your hair is blond, I would go dark on the shorter hairs and then the blue on the longer hairs.
I don’t think you should’ve gotten it cut. Much better before.

I do hope you got Rouge White Bleach, it’s the best out there. Also, I would go with Fudge for hair color next time. They have some darker blues, but also a white base so you can lighten everything to the desired shade.

Damn that’s a long sentance.

How the hell am I supposed to answer a question like this? yes? no? b?
**
Don’t worry about it, it’ll wash out easily. Just be sure to use lots of vaseline…no no no. Use it around your hair line.
**
No problem. They are still cool to dye. Do all of it. In fact they’ll probably hold the color better.
**
You could, but it’d be a bitch and not worth the trouble. Just let the color get on the scalp.
**
Do it all
Well now you have them. Aren’t you glad you asked.
Check out Dye My Hair, a site devote to info about dying your hair in unnatural colors.
I personally like the Special Effects brand because it doesn’t require heat for the color to stain strongly. Manic Panic is most popular, but man, that stuff runs like diarrhea! I just can’t get that stuff to stay in my hair.
See oldie, was that so hard? Thanks for the reply!
Mega: It’s After Midnight Blue by Manic Panic. They also had some light blues, and one purplish blue that looked like a grandma’s dye job.
Anyway, i’ll take the plunge and dye it all. I did get red dye on my scalp the last time, but it did wash out after a couple of washings. After looking at the pics of people on the site baggie linked to, who used the same hair color as I bought, i really like the way it looks and the shades it turned out on some of those people.
Nonono! Don’t use Vaseline! It is very difficult to remove from hair. I know you’d be super careful but even if you got a teeny bit on you’ll have a helluva time trying to get it off.
Use conditioner. It’s water soluble and will provide the barrier you need.

Use a Q-tip and smooth the Vaseline on really thin. If that’s still a problem, try some baby oil.
I apply the color to a soft bristled nail brush and lightly brush upward in short strokes from the ear to the crown. I have found that this coats the hair nicely but gets minimal dye directly on the scalp.
Fudge (isn’t it Phudge?) has some nice colors, but I didn’t think its longevity was too great, same with special effects. I’ve had the best luck with Manic Panic and Jerome Russell’s Punky Color.
