Hair for charity

I’ve read that one can’t sell their hair “Gift of the Magi”-style because most people wash their hair too often and therefore strip the natural oils, making their hair too dry for wig-making. But my mom recently donated her ass-length hair to a Locks of Love (or something) charity that makes wigs for chemo patients. How does this work? Is it a mushy feel-good scam perpetrated by the makeover staff on the Maury Povich show or is the hair actually usable?
