A co-worker of mine is Haitian. His immediate family is here in the US, but he has friends and extended family in Haiti. As far as he knows (and is telling us), his extended family is alive, but he lost one close friend to the earthquake. He may get more sad news int he days to come, as communications open up.
This is terribly sad, of course. But I have an office etiquette question for the SDMB. Normally when someone at the office loses a family member or close friend I get a condolence card, have everyone else sign it, and give the card to the co-worker. I’ve had to do this recently for two co-workers in the normal, non-natural-disaster, course of events.
An earthquake with something like 200,000 people killed does not seem like a “Hallmark moment” to me. I have a feeling that a card is not enough, but I don’t know what to do next.
I’m open to suggestions - let me have them!
