So, a couple years back, a semi-drunk conversation with my girlfriend led me to a revelation:
Hallowe’en is a very good thing, and should happen more than once a year. You can eat all the candy you want, women can dress as skankily as they like, free from the judgment of others for a night, and they play much better movies than during other holidays.
So, I thought, “Why not have a mini-Hallowe’en six months prior to the real one? I can call it Halfowe’en and hold it on May 1st or April 30th, whichever is more conducive to getting drunk.” (frankly, the most important consideration here as far as I’m concerned)
Thus, for two years I’ve hosted Halfowe’en parties, and each year the concept has evolved slightly.
At first, it was just like regular Hallowe’en- costumes, candy, drinking.
This year, I decided that since it’s Halfowe’en, you should wear half a costume.
I decided to let people play this several ways.
- You can wear half a costume, period. As in you’re costumed from the waist up (or down) but wear regular clothes on the other half. One girl went so far as to split her costume left to right (admirable, but fraught with wardrobe malfunction issues)
- You can wear half of two costumes. As in pirate from the waist down, doctor from the waist up, for example. The only rule here is you must come up with a clever name for your costume combo. This year we had an Ob-Gyn Kenobi, for example, who wore a brown cloak over scrubs and a stethoscope and carried a lightsaber. My own creation for this category is the Pilgrim Reaper, who wears a hat with a buckle and hose but carries a scythe and has skeleton makeup.
I feel my holiday is incomplete.
So, post your suggestions on how to improve it!
Incidentally I know from experience that exactly half of you will think this is silly and half will think this is the best thing since sliced bread… but feel free to chime in if you’re among those who aren’t catching the Halfowe’en fever.
Also, if you’re reading this while drunk enough to approve of the idea, let me know if you’re gonna host your own Halfowe’en.
