But damn if I’m not excited! Seriously, Halloween is the best freaking holiday ever! You can dress up! Be someone else for one, brief, shining night!
I’ve got several costume ideas already, some easy, some not so easy. Halloween on on a Wednesday this year, so odds are, the good parties and bar nights will be the previous Friday and Saturday. That’s two nights, so in theory, I can have two costumes quite easily. So far, my current ideas are:
Jack Bauer (I have a ‘Bauer-Bag’ and have been practicing saying, “give me a beer or millions of people will die!”)
Waldo (of ‘Where’s Waldo’ fame. Kind of overdone, though.)
Link (of 'The Legend of Zelda. Also overdone, but damn it, Link rocks.)
Spike (from Buffy. I have the coat, and need reasons to wear it as often as possible.)
And I don’t know how to describe the last choice, other than ‘Old-Timey Swimmer-Guy.’ I plan to grow a handlebar mustache if need be, dye it and my hair black, part it in the middle, and wear one of those old, two-piece men’s bathing suits (red and white stripe preferred, even though I’m fairly sure most of them were black…but the striped ones look awesomer.)
Anyone else out there getting as excited as I am about this?
I’ve actually started watching some of the horror movies I usually watch in October. Most of the summer movies haven’t come out on DVD yet, so I figured I’d get a head start. Also, they’re all available from Netflix.
I am so excited! Halloween is my favorite holiday! Last year, I was the “Angry American” (complete with dirty, old, ripped up jeans with Marine Corps patches on them, a sticker that says, “JOHN KERRY SUCKS”, a “Don’t Mess With Texas” shirt, a military jacket with a yellow ribbon on it, and a camo hat. It was awesome) and maybe I’ll actually get around to my Scarlet Letter idea for this year (Puritan dress that is somehow slutted up in the front-- maybe low cut in the chest or hemmed up really short-- with a bright, red A).
But besides the costume, I’m totally excited about decorating. This is my first Halloween in my very own apartment and my roomie has already been warned about my love of fake cobwebs.
Our local grocer appears to be excited. The candy that is cut-case displayed in the entryway is all in orange boxes painted with spider webs. (I think they were put out this past Tuesday.
Costumes and candy and parties and pranks? Halloween is one of the best days of the year! I suggest you start catching up right away Clockwork and Candy!
Last year, one of my friends went around to the local thrift stores and bought all of the used barbies and barbie knock-offs that he could, and stapled them to a pair of pants and a shirt.
Halloween is the best holiday ever. I think some of the other holidays could learn a lesson or two from it. I would gladly give up crappy Turkey Day for another Halloween type deal. My 4 year old daughter loves Halloween more than anyone on the planet. In fact, she dresses up out of her extensive custom cabinet (Corpse Bride anyone) at least every other day. New England is a pretty good place for Halloween and we manage to stretch it into a season a week or two long but I could still use more.
Oh, don’t worry, I have a dark grey hoodie that is ready for the occasion. This is by far the easiest of my choices, since all I need to do is buy a cheapo squirt gun and spray paint it black.
Wait until you get to college, where Halloween is celebrated with liquor instead of candy. It’s completely ridiculous, and people come up with the most elaborate costumes.
Last year I was one of the Seven Deadly Sins with my roommate and some friends (I was Wrath, my roommate was Pride). I think this year we might be the Fantanas.
I started getting geared up in July. Ever since my retail years, Halloween has replaced Christmas as my favorite holiday. And don’t tell me to be patient, I want Halloween nooooooooooooow! :jumps up and down:
I feel like I kind of missed out last year, since all I did was stay home and give out candy. I didn’t even dress up. I want to make up for it this year, though. Maybe a gore-fest of movies or something.
And I have a question. My brother and I had a tradition of going to a haunted house (one of those yearly dealies where a company gussies up an old warehouse and hires a bunch of actors to pop out of elaborate sets, scaring the weakest of the herd) near Halloween every year, but he says that we’re too old for it now. We’re both 29…is that too old?
What’s got to be fun is living in New Orleans - at least when there’s no hurricanes hunting the grounds…
Carnaval and Halloween. Kind of makes me wish I was any good at staying up at night!
Here in Spain, Halloween is an import from America: many schools have it (I’ve seen parents take into account which school celebrates Halloween when chosing schools), but it’s artificial. All anybody knows about it is, “people in movies do it”.
Dress-up days when I was in school were:
Our-Lady-As-A-Child (sometime in autumn), patron saint of my school. Dress-up and costumes.
St Jean de Lestonnac, founder of the nuns who own the school. Dress-up, no costumes.
Carnaval, in theory the week before Lent but it actually gets stretched to about “the month before Lent”. In school we got to dress up in costumes for Carnaval Friday, plus the reason it gets so stretched is that every school in town celebrates a party… and of course they can’t be at the same time, can they? Of course not!
Halloween is the only time our medical students feel comfortable about rotating with us.
I had to go to a Halloween party at a coworker’s house once. Spent a lot of time thinking about what forensic anthropologists and forensic techs would find scary. Finally I got a lot of official-looking pieces of paper and stamped on them all, “Report Late - Needed Urgently”. Pinned them all over my clothes.
I like the ‘Report Needed’ and the Dr. McNinja costumes.
Hmm. Hallowe’een is a Tuesday this year. That probably means I won’t be working. That’s a pity. Oh, well- I couldn’t wear my costume at work. I’m going to be a luckdragon. A real, dragony luckdragon, not the one in the damn movie. With pearly scales, a mane, and bright red eyes. I’ve started the paper mache dragon mask, and I’m working on ideas for the body. I guess I could get a white catsuit and paint it with iridescent scales. Hmm. Any ideas?
