Diddo, I wasn’t allowed to celebrate Halloween until I was 16 or something. I felt like I missed out on something great that everyone else got to enjoy every year. But don’t worry, it’s a lot more fun when you’re older and can party it up instead of walking around ringing doorbells with your 7 year old brother when you’re 17. Oh wait, that was just me. :smack: But seriously, it is more fun when you can do whatever you want to celebrate.
This reminds me of last year, when one poster repeatedly proclaimed “I’m not one of those crazy Christians who think that Halloween is evil, but I still forbid my children from celebrating it, because it doesn’t have a strong Jesus message.”
I haven’t really done a Halloween costume in a long time. The last time I dressed up was maybe two or three years ago, a buddy of mine went as Arthur and Patsy. He had a Burger King hat, I had two coconut halves and a case of beer strapped to my back as we trotted into the party. Very minimal energy.
I’ve been thinking about actually doing something cool this year. No plans as of yet.
I get much more excited than my kids do (yet—they’re 2 and 4). I make their costumes, and 2 years ago, I was sitting by the front window on Halloween night, going, “Can we go yet? Do you think it’s OK to go now? I don’t see anyone else out. When can we goooooo?” while my daughter would have been perfectly content just to stay home in her ladybug costume.
This year, both of my kids will be Sneetches. I am going to use velcro for the stars, so that they can take turns being one who has stars upon thars.
I’m excited about my costume this year. I was going to do it last year, decided it was too geeky, but I’m over it now. Davis has a really popular local wiki, so I’ll be going as the DavisWiki . I’m gonna paint the logo on my face and wear a white shirt and a bunch of markers tied to it. Maybe tape a polaroid on for the Mystery Picture and make a few fake entries to start it.
I have a purple velvet crown with “ermine” trim and gold accents, and a pair of hideous purple velveteen stretch pants I couldn’t resist. The pants were on super-clearance at KMart and may have been about $5. I’m not sure what this will work out to be but perhaps Queen of My Double-Wide Trailer.
“So I made her the queen of my double wide trailer
With the polyester curtains and the redwood deck
Times she’s run off and I’ve got to trail her
Dang her black heart and her pretty red neck”
Oh, man, did you ever get screwed over. You got some serious catching up to do.
SWMBO comments every year about how she refuses to have anything to do with Halloween any more, now that I’m in the picture. She just sits on the couch, trying to listen to the TV over the terrified screams of the children running away from the house.
She is absolutely convinced that we are raising a generation of potential ax murderers in our neighborhood, and it’s all my fault. She refuses to accept my idea that any candy left in the bowl is ours, and if they were too frightened to take any, that’s more for us.
It often snows here on Halloween, the first wet, heavy and brief snow of the season (we’re lucky to get any more of significance until January, however), and the night is icy-cool as well as very dark (DST expires the weekend before Halloween)—leaves are down on sidewalks to rustle thru, bowls of candy are left outside everywhere, and spiked hot cocoa or mulled wine is available on corners in certain participating neighborhoods…small-town USA Bradbury-style Halloweens are, well, to die for, of course.
I’ll work my way through my annual Halloween reading list starting in about a month, and I am glued to any channel providing a slate of horror flicks for the month of Oct., plus excitedly re-watching all the ones I own.
Sugar, liquor and horror…is there a more enriching combination anywhere, for one sensational night a year? Altho, C and C, you can get by on sugar and horror for a few years yet and not miss a thing, darlin’! Trust me.
I’m somewhat famous for my costumes at work, so I need to get an early start. My sister got the final vote this year. I’m copying Keira Knightly’s pirate outfit from PotC2. I’ve already found the patterns for the clothes, and I know where I can buy the accessories. My other ideas included Edward Elric from FullMetal Alchemist (way too much work for a costume that no one in my office would get) and Kaylee from Firefly (not costumey enough for those not familiar with the series).
My previous costumes have included Rogue from X-Men (movie version), Roxie Hart from Chicago, Elektra from Daredevil (movie version, complete with real sais!) and Supergirl from JLU. I’ve never won the office’s costume contest, but I think I’ve had more fun than anyone.
I’ve won my office’s contest two years in a row - 1st as Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and last year as Tippi Hedren in “The Birds”. I’m open to all movie themed costume ideas that can work in an office setting (no mermaid outfits - can’t drag that tail around; no nudity (even partial), etc). I also have a glass-front office that can be brought into the theme - for BaT, I made it Tiffany’s window.
My quad did a movie theme a few years ago, and I tried to convince a coworker to be Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I’d love to see pictures of your costumes if you have them.
Do you prefer classic movies or recent ones? That would help narrow down the costume suggestions.
Back in high school, I started this “tradition” where I’d thow on a ghillie suit or a net, and set myself like a shrub by the front porch. My folks would leave a bowl ‘o’ candy out with a note saying “Take one for yourself, one for your friend!”
Obviously, there’d be smartasses that would try to take the whole damn bowl. Being seruptissiouly incognito, I’d reach out with an unexpected hand and ‘remind’ them to take only one.
Halloween is my favorite holiday. I love to go all-out on Halloween, and I’m debating on what sort of costume to craft this year. I’m already carefully inspecting Halloween decorations for my house…can’t wait! Bummer that Halloween falls smack in the middle of the week this year, but we’ll just start the celebrations early - like on October 1st.
In college I went to a large Halloween party given by some friends and I won the costume contest. I went dressed as a french maid, complete with fishnet stockings, stilletto heels, feather duster and all.
I’m about to hit Goodwill to start putting together costumes and decorating the house. Some years I like to come up with really funny costumes; other years I find myself wanting to go for a good scare or gross-out. I’m thinking about going Goth this year so I’m going to start shopping for a costume.
Oh yeah, and the Silverjuniors love Halloween too - they get the biggest kick out of helping me decorate and choosing their costumes. The eldest likes to get really creative with it and loves thinking up costume ideas.
