I’m trying to get an early start on organizing a Halloween party, and I plan on having TV’s in a couple rooms running spooky-type videotapes or DVD’s. One of the ideas I had was a collection of those excellent Looney Tunes shorts with Bugs Bunny vs. Witch Hazel or that vampire guy (Count Bloodcount, I think?-- "You wouldn’t hit a bat with glasses on, would you?"), the cartoons where Porky Pig and Sylvester are stuck in a haunted house, the one where Tweety Bird gets into the Mr. Hyde formula…ooh, there were so many good ones.
Now, I cannot believe that Warner Brothers has not issued a holiday-themed collection of some sort along these lines, and yet so far I’ve only been able to locate Bugs Bunny’s Howl-o-ween Special, an inferior TV clip show with extra-crappy modern linking animation. However, this may simply reflect my transcendently inadequate library skills. Does anyone know of any other release that includes more of these cartoons in their original uncut state?
There was a WB laserdisc collection called LOONEY TUNES: AFTER DARK: Ghoul, Ghost and Goblin Cartoon Classics. The titles on that LD were:
Jumpin’ Jupiter
Water, Water Every Hare
Bewitched Bunny
Hyde and Hare
Night of the Living Duck
Transylvania 6-5000
The Wearing of the Grin
Scaredy Cat
Broom-Stick Bunny
Hyde and Go Tweet
Hare-Way to the Stars
The Abominable Snow Rabbit
The Duxorcist
The Hasty Hare
I’m not familiar with any video collection other than the one you mentioned.
Cartoon Crazy’s Spooky Toons
There’s Good Boos To-night
Fright to the Finish
Jasper in a Jam
Jack Frost
The Lunar Luger
Balloon Land
Spooking About Africa
The Scared Crows
The Huffless, Puffless Dragon
Is My Palm Read
Wot a Night
The Devil’s Ball
Ouija Board
Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Black and White
The Gorilla Mystery
Mickey’s Nightmare
The Mad Doctor
Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Living Color
Pluto’s Judgment Day
Lonesome Ghosts
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad Contains The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Mickey’s House of Villains
Winnie the Pooh: Frankenpooh/Spookable Pooh
The Monster Frankenpooh
Things That Go Piglet in the Night
Pooh Moon
A Knight to Remember
Rock-a-Bye Pooh Bear
Playhouse Disney Halloween
Barney’s Halloween Party
SpongeBob SquarePants: Halloween
Nicktoons: Halloween — Tales of Fright
All of the “spooky” WB toons I remember have already mentioned, so I’ll just point a non-WB possibility.
There are some Samurai Jack episodes that would work pretty well. Episode 30 (“Jack and the Zombies”) is set in a very creepy cemetary, complete with hordes of undead, and episode 35 is “Jack and the Haunted House”, also very atmospheric. I had #30 playing on a projector at the end of a haunted house for the kiddies last Halloween, and it went over pretty well.
