There I was, playing on my favorite Halo server, “24-7 Death Island” (I love the scenery, and the map is superbly laid out, when I got disconnected, and my screen read:
“The server administrator has banned you from playing on this server.”
What the fuck, you idiot? I’m not a teamkiller, and I’ve played on the server long enough for you to just about know my family. What the hell did I do to you?
Heh. Great link. I agree about the public servers, but fortunately (for me,) Halo is pretty mindless at its heart. Run around, shoot people, die, respawn, repeat. I’m a simple guy. Sure you could try to cooperate and win the game, but this is a public server, right.
Still, my favorite online player is the card who oh-so-cleverly named himself “a dirty ngger," so when he kills someone, the tagline comes up "X was killed by a dirty ngger.”
I don’t see what Halo is about when it comes to online gaming.
Compare it to any other online gamig and Halo is slow, has far too few maps and is very inflexible.
I’ve not seen anyone yet wite any mods to it, nor even any new maps, but that’s Microsoft for you, maximum copyright protection.
The console commands are very limited and it means you can’t tailor the game experience much, such as getting that huge honkin gun off the screen which obscures a significant part of your view.
When you look at other online games, some of the most popular mods have arisen from players writing them such as freeze and instagib and these are now so popular that they have their own leagues, clans and now these mods are included as standard game variants on more recent offerings.
Microsoft have locked down the game code so tightly that they have effectively excluded the mod writer, map writer so the game becomes stale quite rapidly.
Add to that the games hunger for computing power, especially on graphics that a machine capable of running it well is better employed running Unreal Tournament 2004 or perhaps Fary Cry(which is not a great online game but a good 1st person adventure)
It is now possible to play single player maps, as multi-player. And now with the release of HMT 3.5 (it’s on the site), more and more are coming out with SP to MP conversions. It’s pretty cool.
It is unfortunate that Microsoft has everything on lock down. But to be honest, I don’t really mind it. I’ve played UT2004, and my god man, it’s like lemmings on crack or something. Way too fast, more weapons than I can handle. I don’t need 10 different weapons with 2 modes of fire. I’ll take eight grenades, a sniper rifle and rocket launcher, and lets get it on!
The only thing I use UT2004 for is the textures, because they are better then Halos. I just inject the UT2004 textures into Halo, and it looks pretty bad ass. Plus, with the big honkin gun? I’m able to edit the fuel rods top half to be transparent, therefore giving me a better view. And my warthogs even have 22’s on them.
So there really isn’t much coming from Microsoft for Halo PC, but there are plenty of modding and hacking tools to keep us Halo modders busy from 3rd party developers.
I like the pacing in Halo a lot better than that of UT2004. There’s a lot more room for tactics and stealth. UT2004 seems, from my online experience with the demo, to be more of a scream-and-leap game.
I used to be a major devotee of the original UT, but haven’t liked the last two incarnations as well.
I was actually amazed at only running into a couple jackasses when I played UT2003 on Xbox live, but I still prefer the Tribes 2 server I frequent. No bigotry allowed including calling people gay/fag which is a nice respite from the hate-fest that is the rest of online gaming. Teamkillers are either vote kicked or if they really piss off an admin they’ll get their skin changed to bright, taxi cab yellow and be set as a mortar beacon to attract enemy fire.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the other hand…nothing like people named jewburner(using the flamethrower, of course) trying to recruit people to “join the Axis at stormfront.com!”
The dumbass did finish third to last on the server, which was kind of satisfying.
