Hamilton the movie musical to be released October 25, 2021

You heard it here first.

My life is not so great right now, but I am doing my Happy Dance at this news!

And I predict Linn-Manuel Miranda will finally get an Oscar and join EGOT!

I haven’t seen it…is that the original cast?

Yes, this is a filmed version of the Broadway show with the original cast.

To quote the wiki: Principal Broadway cast.

It’s got Linn and Leslie Odom Jr. as Hamilton and Burr, and is a film of the stage show.

ETA: The Tonys are the only award show I usually watch, but I’ve already pencilled in the 2021 Oscars

I’m thinking there’s a solid chance LMM will get an Oscar for In the Heights, coming this year. I feel like a lot of folks don’t realize / have forgotten how good the music is. And given that the new song for ITH is a new closing number and LMM is still writing at the height of his powers, I think it’ll be in the running.

I’m honestly not sure what categories LMM would be eligible for with Hamilton.

It’s worth noting that this wasn’t “just” a filmed performance of Hamilton like one of those “Live from Theater” productions, from what I understand. They shot without an audience to allow cameras a lot more freedom.

Yeah, the music will **not **be eligible because it’s not new for the movie. Academy rules state that an eligible song “must be recorded for use in the motion picture prior to any other usage,” that is why when musicals are made into movies they always add in an original song.

I don’t think a filmed stage performance has *ever *even been in consideration for any other awards, so there’s not really any precedence for other categories.

This makes me so happy that I may have to rise up and pre-order when it is available.

Wait…2021?!? Damn, I read that wrong and though it was October of this year. I’m sad again.

Fantastic! Never got to see it, but always wanted to.

I loved the show, saw the touring company and plan to see it again either in NYC or London, but I’m not sure I’m interested in seeing the movie.

Yeah, I’ve been curious about it, but not curious enough to drop Broadway-level prices on a ticket. A movie ticket, though, that I can afford.

The producers have a lottery for a limited number of ten-dollar tickets for every performance of the stage show, so it is possible (though not easy) to see the show for movie-ticket money.

Not exactly true. The Laurence Olivier version of OTHELLO (1965) was essentially a filmed version of the stage play, with neither the cinematography nor the production design trying to fool anyone of that fact. That film went on to earn 4 Oscar nods–all for acting. including the 7th for Olivier and the 1st for future double-winner Maggie Smith.

For HAMILTON, technically, LMM would be eligible for Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay (and remember, they gave Kenneth Branagh an Oscar nod for his 4-hour “adaptation” of HAMLET that didn’t change or remove a word of the play).

News has been out on this for a while. I loved the play (best Broadway play I’ve ever seen), but not all that excited about the movie version.

Very possible. We’ve done it 3 times in San Francisco on the lottery (and once full price.) Very easy to enter if you have the Hamilton app.

Hamilton fans might be interested to know that LMM’s first musical, In the Heights, has also been made into a movie and is being released June 26. I bought my wife the original cast recording for Christmas 2 years ago. It is pretty good.

Wiki entry here.

If this was an adaptation for screen, I would be excited. If it’s just a live recording of the stage play, that seems like the worst of both worlds.

When Linn found out a local NYC high school was doing an amateur production of In the Heights, he brought the movie over to see it.

Everything I’ve heard and read about him says that no only is he incredibly talented (how many people write and star in their own musicals) but he is just a super nice person who has not let fame and fortune change him.

Good Lord, it seems like everyone has won that damn lottery in SF…except me, despite entering (for a single ticket) every day for months and months and months.

Tickets are cheaper now for certain shows that I’m just going to bite the bullet before it disappears altogether.

You’re going to like this even less. At 9:30 this morning I got a message from the app saying that we had until 10 am to buy tickets for the 1 pm matinee. So we did. We just got back. Keep at it - the people next to us got the message at 9:30 this morning also.

They’ve changed some of the choreography since the last time we saw it last September. Keep trying.
I think attendance is down - they had closed off the upper balcony for this performance.
