Hamster immortalised in song dies in partner's arms

That’s Mouth Mouthy, AKA Leaper, who had the unusual ability (before he became deceased) to leap out of his cage. And I’ve observed hamsters for 8 years (with breaks) and this is the first time I have seen the bereaved partner seeking out her husband (actually it was the second time round for both of them) and cudling up against him resting her head on his, as they often did in cold weather especially, even though he was stone cold. Was she trying to warm him up, I wonder?

Ohhhh. :frowning:

That actually made me sad. Poor hamster. Poor Mrs. Hamster. Give her a little extra corn nibblins for me.

Lost a gerbil just last month–Jellybean is still in the freezer in a bejeweled casket the kids made for her, we have to wait until spring to bury her because the ground here is frozen. Her cagemate, Peppermint, was inconsolable for days. It’s weird because you get to thinking that they’re just little rats until you see them actually acting lonely. Breaks one’s heart.

Pardon my ignorance, but how do they act lonely?

Ohhh. I actually teared up a little. Poor Lady Hamster.

My own hamster, Moobear, (the last one of 5) died in my hands last Saturday.

All 5 died while I was holding them. A couple of them I actually held all night while they were dying.

No more hamsters for me. :frowning:

Oooh. My hamster when I was a kid was named Honey… :frowning:

Aww.

It’s hard losing a hamster. If you tell people you’re upset about it, you can see in their eyes (some of them anyway), “it’s just a rodent”.

We lost one of our goldfish a few weeks ago. We woke up to find Rock lying motionless at the bottom of the bowl. The kids worried about how the other fish, Princess, would deal with being alone.

Great, it turns out. She’s put on weight and swims around more. In general she seems like a happier fish.

Now my kids suspect foul play. “Princess knows something,” my five-year-old daughter says … .

Awwwwww… poor little LadyHamster. Animals definitely do form attachments to one another.

When my little white mouse, Little Mickey Pink Eyes, was dying, I carried him around in my flannel shirt pocket, and he died in my hand. I don’t like the thought of my pets dying alone. Not even a mouse.

When I was little, my brother gave me ten goldfish. Fourteen years later, two were left, giant white monsters that everyone pretty much ignored. When the penultimate one died, nobody noticed for days until my mom spotted the (mostly eaten) carcass. Then when the last one died, again nobody noticed until it started smelling really bad.

Yeah, so much for devotion to one’s pets…

Next time try a lighter grip.

Shodan

My cousin accidentally killed one of his hamsters when we were 12 or 13. The cage door had been left partially open and the one got out. My cousin didn’t see him on the floor, and he accidentally stepped on it. He was really upset.

And then there’s a friend who found that one of her gerbils ate the other one. Ew.

aww…how sad

Sorry to hear about your poor hammie. :frowning:
Rodents can really pine for their cagemates. When my rat Lola died a few months ago, my other two (Bettina and Cookie) wouldn’t come out of their little plastic igloos for a week, except to eat and drink a little. They normally love to come out and play but when I opened the door, they just gave a sad glance my way and curled back up. :frowning:

(they’re happy again, now. :))

My sympathies. I cried like an infant when my pet rat Eva died. Her sister Zsa-Zsa went into an all too obvious depression-- she absolutely refused to move from her hammock, even for yogurt treats. Now THAT’S highly depressed for a rodent.

A few weeks later, after we’d properly mourned, I adopted a rescue rat from the local SPCA and placed her cage next to Zsa-Zsa’s so they could get used to each other. Zsa-Zsa was so excited to have a new friend, and the poor little newbie was banging on her cage as if to say “get this crazy friggin’ rat away from me!!!”

Zsa-Zsa and Suede the newby are big co-cuddlers now. Rats are such great pets.

I saw this thread title and thought of Harvey the Wonder Hampster, but yours sound even cooler. My condolences.
