In the past few months I’ve started my new job which has involved a fair bit of hands on work including lifting, fixing stuff, mixing and dispensing various chemicals, etc. and I’ve noticed that the skin on my hands is becoming increasingly dry and cracked. It also cuts quite easily compared to previously, with the main area of dry skin around my thumb and forefinger, both hands.
Can anyone reccomend a good hand cream (availavle in the UK please!) that will sort this out? I 'm not after soft, gentle skin that will make me look ten years younger, just skin like on the rest of my body!
My late husband had this problem, and the doctor recommended that he kept a tube of E45 [obtainable at any chemist in the UK] with him at all times, and applied it every time he washed his hands. While it didn’t take the problem away completely, it certainly helped quite a bit.
Avon has a really nice hand cream that isn’t offensively girly smelling. Avon Moisture Therapy It isn’t greasy and lasts through a quick handwashing.
Another cheap alternative is: Crisco Shortening which is rather greasy, as it is meant for cooking, but is excellent to use at night on hands and feet. A bonus would be that you could cover yourself in it and swim the English Channel to help insulate you. (Seriously, using a shortening is a quick fix for hands, lip balm and feet issues, as well as greasing quick squeaky things.)
If you can get your hands on a tin of Burt’s Bees Hand Salve, you’ll thank me forever.
I’ve been using it for a month and it has turned my hands into silk. Allow me to list the ingredients, as I happen to have a tin in front of me: sweet almond oil, olive oil, beeswax, tocopheryl acetate & tocopherol (viatmin E), comfrey root extract, rosemary oil & leaf extract, lavandin oil & flower extract, eucalyptus oil.
It goes on just slightly greasy but in a few minutes it just melts into your skin leaving your hand soft and supple but without the slightest hint of oil. Lubricious is the best word my little brain can think of to describe it. Its scent is pleasing, not overpowering by any stretch of the imagination.
They can be found at www.burtsbees.com and if they won’t ship internationally, email me and I’d be more than happy to send you a tin.
Come on now…you have a tube of men’s hand cream with you at all times. Don’t pop in here and act like you don’t use that ‘hand cream’.
Whether in the UK, USA or the Amazon River Basin, your tube of vitamin E rich ‘hand cream’ is always conveniently portable and waiting with just a squeze or pull, and it’s self sealing cap is a bonues.
OK. Here’s the link to the Burt’s Bees section of a UK based site. I didn’t see, however, the tin of hand salve. I do know a smaller version of the tin is available in one of the starter kits but I’m not sure which one.
You can also go with Neutrogena’s Norwegian Formula hand cream. Just a tiny dab does wonders, it’s not all perfumey, or greasy, a good manly hand cream.
Some guys swear by Corn Huskers Lotion. It’s a thick, clear liquid. Others use Bag Balm, though it’s made for cow’s udders. My favorite is Avon’s Moisture Therapy Hand Cream for Extremely Dry Skin. It really really works. avon.com
Well, I wouldn’t like to go to your house for dinner if you prepared the food then. And don’t the keys on your keyboard get so sticky after a while that they tend to jam??
My dad swears by this. He’s been an airplane mechanic for many, many years (4 decades now, I believe) and knows whereof he speaks. Has a manly scent and really does the job.
OK thanks for the quick replies everyone, it looks like my options are:
E45 cream - I think there’s some of that around the house somewhere, but re-applying every time I wash my hands could be a pain as I wash my hands every hour(ish).
Burt Bee’s Hand Salve - is this the same as Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Crème? If so then it’s on the UK site you (JuanitaTech) mentioned at £8 for 2oz.
Neutrogena’s Norwegian Hand cream - well, it’s got a manly advert and I’ve got an obsession for all things Norwegian (don’t ask) so I’ll give this one a go.
Corn Huskers Lotion - doesn’t appear to be available in the UK.
Septodont makes a great hand cream that will stay on through one handwashing. Sold under the name Epicrem in the UK, it’s marketed to dentists and doctors. You may be able to find it at a uniform shop.
I work for a dentist and wash my hands several times an hour. This is the best thing I’ve found to prevent drying and cracking of the skin during (brutally cold Chicago) winter. I’ll gladly send you a tube if you have difficulty finding it.

I use this stuff, but it can be kind of gross if you need to touch things after you put it on. It’s really, really thick. I use it only at night, right before bed. During the day, I use Lubriderm fragrence free lotion. I’m a girl, but am a civil engineer, so I have a lot of oudoor work that makes my hands dry. The two lotions in combination really work well.
No, the Hand Salve isn’t the same as the Hand Crème. I have the Hand Crème, too, but wouldn’t reccommend it. It’s too stiff, for lack of a better word, and doesn’t go on as easily as the salve.
