I do that just because I’m really sad, not a gamer
My husband and I also played EQ for 3 years. (We have since broke the habit) When he would do something that irrated me I would look at him and say" Your wife glares at you, ready to attack" or “Your wife stares at you dubiously” or “Your wife looks at you with complete indifference”. If he took out the trash or did something nice then he gained wife faction points.
We both found humor in it anyway
My college roommate liked to come up behind people (especially me) and say “Boo!”. I developed a habit of replying by saying “Scream” in a calm voice(or often a whisper, if she’d whispered to me). More than once I was accused of getting that from playing MUDs.
Roommate was really proud of herself the one time she got me to say “scream” in a voice bordering on a scream. I’d returned to our “apartment” late at night, and was about half-asleep. Walked up stairs, set my backpack in my bedroom, saw that roommate’s door was closed, went into the bathroom, shut the door and did what one normally does before going to bed. I heard a door open and shut, but thought nothing of it. Well, actually, I think I looked at her door to see if she was awake, but it was shut. Next I walked into my bedroom and she popped out from behind my door and said “boo!” I didn’t scream, but I said “scream” with more vigor than usual. My heartrate was up, and you can believe I was no longer half asleep.
In unrelated news, the guy I was guarding in capture the flag one evening and I compared his situation to being a vampire in torpor per Vampire: the Masquerade. I no longer remember the significance, exactly, but my Fame sweatshirt always got comments from my Vampire playing friends.
Wouldn’t a gamer say “pass me that d6”? Okay, that’s what I would say.
We also do the ‘you failed your ______ check’ all the time. Our cat often fails his jump check.
Last night while watching LOTR:ROTK, Ardred said, “Damn those grapple checks” when Shelob (sp?) grabbed Sam. Then he added “but he made his escape artist check”.
I’m not a real gamer, but I know the lingo. Unfortunately, there isn’t much of a gaming crowd at my school. There goes my chance of being voted ‘most likely to be eaten by a grue’ in the yearbook.
I’m amazed no one has mentioned “crit.”
That had to be the single most-used gamer term I’ve ever heard. “Crit,” or other variations on the terms “critical hit” or “critical miss.”
Every gamer chum I’ve ever had has (to some extent) used the term as an expletive or interjection upon getting really lucky (or screwing things up beyond all recognition) in real life, be it tossing a bit of trash into a wastebasket, finding a decent parking place, missing the squirrel that just ran across the street…
Here’s another good one:
I was taking a film class, and we were going to shoot something at my house. We were planning it out in class, and I sketched a quick floorplan of my house to figure out camera setups. Someone asked, “Is that a door or a window?” and I explained, “I’m using D&D map conventions.” Half the people in the group nodded in total understanding. The other half looked at me like I was a freak.
“Don’t worry, this car is +3 vs. people who try to cut me off”
One that a friend and I recently started using was whenver we got hurt somehow, either falling down or cutting ourselves while making dinner, we would yell out, “Ahh, my hit points!”
If it was something small, like tripping or bumping our head, it was usually followed by, “don’t worry, it’s just subdual damage.”
Ah, yes, hit points.
If I take a day off work because I’m sick, I tell people I’m going to spend the day resting to regain HP.
If something if mine is broken, I don’t fix it right away, just in case it regenerates some hit points on its own.
I thought of something else. I’m ashamed to admit this, even in a thread about being a dorky roleplayer, but we sometimes refer to calling someone from our Amber group on the cell phone as “Trumping” them. When doing so, it is customary to announce, in response to their hello, “Hi, you’re getting a Trump call.” Sigh Geeky, geeky, geeky.
http://archive.gamespy.com/comics/nodwick/ffn/ffn028.htm In which a couple of geeks view LOTR: FOTR in order to compile game stats on the characters. Only gamers would find this funny, or even understandable.
