Handymen- A question concerning drywall.

Well I just got done applying the drywall to my room addition. The only thing, because a couple of my walls were crooked to begin with, I have some gaps between the edges of some of the boards. Especially where the walls meet the ceiling. These gaps are maybe a quarter inch.

Now, I know I have to tape the edges and apply “mud”. Since I have such large gaps, would it be wise to pack some mud into the gaps before applying the tape? Or just run the tape over the gaps and apply mud from there.

Also, should I use the regular paperlike tape? Or that sticky, perforated tape. Which one is best?

Even on good, tight fitting joints, its ususal to apply mud then paper tape, then more mud.

If you’re using the mesh sticky tape, then you apply the tape and force the mud through. If it were me I’d probably use the paper tape and apply some mud into the gaps first. I’ve used both, though not recently, and found the paper tape better for corners.

BTW, a quarter inch gap is nothing! You did the ceiling first right?

Ahh… the drywalling. You couldn’t pay me to do that anymore! UGH!

I would fill the gap up with mud, be sure to let it dry though. It’ll take longer, of course.

I’ve only used the old paper tape.

Remember, have patience, take your time, wear a dustmask, and close off the room you’re working on (including furnace ducts) or you’ll have dust everywhere!

Uhg! I hate hanging dry wall. But I’ll second the fact that you have to put the mud in first, then tape, then more mud. then sand then prime then paint.

Boy I hope you did the ceiling first!!!
