Worse than that, they victimized the lowest level functionary they could find, and when she was fired, offered to make a public spectacle of her as a demonstration of Sean Hannity’s humanity and compassion. Dick cheese has more humanity and compassion than Sean Hannity even knows exists.

I’d say it’s pretty hard to believe they fired her over this, but I’ve worked in too many call centers to be surprised by it. They probably nailed her for speaking “for the company” in a public realm without authorization from their PR/marketing department. I know from years of experience that most reps do not have the power to say no or hang up when asked stupid, leading, and/or entrapping questions.

More or less, yes. Because under gift tax rules that money is straight up tax free, no payroll taxes or anything on it. $25,000 in her checking account, no withholding and no requirement to pay any taxes on it. When you compare that to what she would have made over the year minus payroll taxes (probably not minus income taxes, at $25k w/two children she probably is not a net income tax payer), then she will actually have a good enough margin over what her actual take home pay would have been that it will certainly cover her health premiums. Premiums that will be subsidized in part by Obamacare, of course.

This is standard call center stuff, especially government call center. If I take a call from the media when I’m working the switchboard at my job, and I answer any question from an acknowledged media source that isn’t “What’s the number for the department’s Press Officer?”, I’m subject to discipline, up to and including termination. I CANNOT speak for the department or the state. Period. I’m not authorized. The second she knew she was on the line with Hannity’s producer, she should have given him the number for the ACA press officer and hung up. That’s the standard. And I speak as a union member (AFSCME). This isn’t an abuse, this is the standard, and for good reason.

This was her first job in a call center and she said during her training no one ever said, “Don’t talk to the media.”

But of course because you know something means everyone else in the world is supposed to know it too. Also it doesn’t really matter because she was a plant and Hannity paid her to infiltrate the company just so he could pull this little stunt.

He told Erline at the beginning of the call that she was on the radio, on the Sean Hannity show, and that she had to say it was OK (a statement- not a question). She said it was OK.

What’s strange is I heard this on the radio when it happened when I was picking up the kids from school. The person who answered the phone said she was not sure if it was OK to record the call (twice, I think). Then the kids came and I turned down the volume.

He must have called back and got this Erline person.
