Time for a visual arts thread.
Poor guy. I think it was Panofsky, perhaps, who called him a “major minor master.” Highly underrated. He’s really damn good though-- terribly clever, but so overshadowed by Rogier v.d. Weyden and Jan van Eyck, and as soon as you hit 1500 no one wants to speak of anyone but Bosch and Breugel.
And the Minoans. Damn, that was a great tradition.
And Carolingian manuscript painting. With that sudden, temporary re-emergence of the Roman painting style in the Gospel Book of Charlemagne, for example. Great stuff.
Tilman Riemenschneider! Why doesn’t anyone ever think of northern Renaissance era sculptors aside from Sluter (who admittedly is great)?
Did I mention Sigmar Polke? Why is everyone paying attention to Julian Schnabel instead of Polke?
Ok, I feel better now.
