Is anyone familiar with Hans-Werner Sahm’s work but me? I have three of his posters matted and framed hanging in my house, but I’ve never met another human (outside of the poster shop I bought them at and various google results) who’s even heard of him.
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
Here in Germany you can find many posters of his works. I don’t follow the poster market that closely but he clearly is one of the big names.
So, yes, I recognize the name and I have seen many of his paintings but unfortunately I don’t know much about him.
For those who haven’t heard of him, here is a gallery.
Oooh! Me, me, pick me!
Our intro to Sahm was strange. DH and I were house-hunting, and one house had a print on the wall that we really liked. We told our realtor we didn’t want the house, but if we could find out who the artist was who had done the print, we’d be thrilled.
Realtor couldn’t or didn’t find out, and we spent the next year (literally) browsing poster shops, art sites, etc., trying to figure it out. Finally, a clerk at a poster shop listened to our description of the print and said, “That sounds like Hans Sahm.” Turns out there are distribution problems getting his work in the US, so I googled, found his gallery and ordered the print for DH’s birthday last year.

You want my honest opinion? He strikes me as a technically proficient (okay, expert) artist of high kitsch. Some of his works remind me of stills from the Star Wars prequels; others, of 19th-C. Romantic landscapes crossed with a rock-album-cover sensibility.
Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing. I for one would welcome Sahm as our new rock-album-cover-artist overlord… or as a Hollywood conceptual artist/imagineer/whatever they call those people. And I wouldn’t mind having the opportunity of buying posters of his works at the mall graphics shop. But I don’t see this guy being enshrined by critics and academics as a serious Artist-with-a-capital-A.
Of course, I could be wrong about that last bit.
OH!! :smack:
the jigsaw puzzle guy!
