Hanson meets The Blues Brothers

I just started listening to their new CD, which is streaming on their web site.

You can listen to it here. So far, what I’ve heard is really good. If you like this video, have a listen to the other songs.

Point of fact: Thinkin’ Bout Somethin’ is the only song from the new album there. Oh, well actually maybe a couple others, but the other songs streaming there are from an EP put out in the fall (or summer maybe?) called Stand Up Stand Up (available on iTunes!). I do believe some of the SUSU songs will be on the new album, titled Shout it Out, but the album per se is not streaming yet.

I pre-ordered so I just got the newest song. Good stuff.

Oh, and someone said upthread that Weird Al directed the video. Not true, can’t remember the director’s name, but Wierd Al is a long time friend of the band and they just wanted him to be part of it.

AND re: Zac’s not wearing proper attire - the band has said they wanted it to be a spot-on homage rather than a parody or direct copy, so they deliberately ‘modernized’ the clothing a bit (on the dancers as well), thus Zac’s rockstar gear. Ike (who indeed was dressed up as the bearded guitar player) played the Elwood part straight because he generally is the suit-wearing guy in the band anyway.

Easter egg: two of Taylor’s kids are shown dancing at about the 1 minute mark. (yes two OF - he has four. boggle)

Thank OG this long-time unabashed Hanson fan is FINALLY seeing some love for the boys. About damn time.

BTW Thank you, Sam Stone. Your endorsement means a lot, as you always provide such astute musical criticism in the Idol threads. You should definitely get Stand Up Stand Up, there are some wonderful gems there (I adore “Use Me Up”). The new album ‘drops’ (as the kids say) in June.

And lest anyone question my dedication, I very nearly booked a flight to Tulsa last month just to watch this video being made. I only found out later that everyone who showed up got to be in the dance scene at the end, dammit. :smack:

I don’t NEED a refresher, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to watch it again.

Now all we need is a “Marilyn Hanson” video…

And let’s not forget the serial killer Charles Hanson, who scrawled the words to Mmmbop on the walls of his victims.

OK, that was pretty fun but he was holding the cowbell wrong in the first bit.
Was that really shot in OK?

snort I guess that supports my favorite theory that most of their songs are about death and misery. It’s true! (or I can find enough cites to make it sound somewhat plausible, anyway)

Yes. The indoor pawn shop was a set built inside the offices of their record label - 3CG - in Tulsa. Look closely and you’ll see Hanson posters from various eras decorating the set. The outdoor dancing scenes were a location they chose (also in Tulsa) because it looked so similar to the one in the Blues Brothers scene.

I know entirely too much about this band. :dubious:

…that video was better than Blues Brothers 2000!!!

Y’know, I’m not gonna lie: I actually like some Hanson songs. Never much cared for their pop stuff back in the 90’s, but their newer albums have had some really great singles. “Penny and Me” was awesome, as was “Save Me.” “Dancing in the Wind” was cool, too. Seriously, “Save Me” should have been a huge hit.

I say this as a male who likes Motorhead, Sabbath, Mercyful Fate, and Venom.

Hey, some parts of BB2000 were pretty good. I loved the version of John the Revealator. Plot was mostly horrid, but anything with John Goodman was pretty good, too.

So surprisingly I liked this, and am happy not to see too much auto-hate on the band. I did go watch the original as well, which is also fun.

They also do a decent cover of Radiohead’s “Optimistic” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upgejnlYgSE (ignore the screaming teenyboppers at the start…)

Not bad, but what’s up with the keyboard solo in the middle that sounds like it’s being played on a guitar?

If Universal ever puts out another Anniversary Edition, they need to include this.

JG was good, but I’ll have to admit, I watched the movie for the 30 seconds of Jonny Lang singing. I’ve been in love with that boy since I was, like, 13.
