Hanson meets The Blues Brothers

Seriously, as someone who generally bags on Hanson, that was pretty cool. Good for them. May well be the coolest thing that’s ever happened in Oklahoma.

Bonus points for those who recognize the tambourine player.

Excellent video, and not a bad song.

As for the Tambourine player for those who want to know:

Weird Al

Video on Youtube for people who don’t want the myspace cooties.

Oh that was cute. My daughter loved Hanson years ago when they were all wee little boys.

The horn section looks a lot like the original Blues Brothers horn section, but it flashed by too fast to be sure…TRM

I think the horns are just dressed up to look right; they’re too young. Had me wondering too, though.

I thought the title was going to be literally true, or an approximation of literally true, and that would have been a shame. I actually liked it this way. Pretty lovingly rendered. Except what’s the one dude’s problem that he’s got to be in his heartthrob uniform instead of properly attired?

That was delightful! Thank you for the link. Makes me feel 10 years old again. Good ol’ Hanson.

I think, but I’m not sure, that Ike* is in the Steve Cropper role in the guitar/bass line. It doesn’t make sense to me that Zac would get to do two parts (improperly attired Belushi part and drummer Willie Hall) and Ike wouldn’t.

*If you don’t know your Hansons, he’s the one in the proper Blues Brothers suit; Zac is in the jacket and Tay is in the Ray role.

That…was way better than I expected it to be. But I’m a sucker for a good brass section. And anything that has the tambourine player’s endorsement is all right by me.

My guess is that Weird Al directed it. Not only is it a dead-on homage (almost shot-for-shot), but he’s directed Hanson videos in the past.

I also enjoyed that a lot more than I was expecting to.

It wasn’t too bad. I noticed the Tambourine Player right away and laughed out loud. It’s a really pretty decent video and the song isn’t too bad either.

Then again, I loved Hanson when I was a young lass, too.

As a playing semi-pro musician, I know I can come across as an apologist, defending musicians that are popular but get dumped on by “real” music fans…

…so, with that as a backdrop, let me just say that Hanson - or, at least, the keyboardist and singer Taylor Hanson - rocks. Very, very talented as a musician. Yeah, their kiddie stuff was, well, kiddie stuff, but the dude has chops. You can choose to not like how he uses them, but they are there.

fwiw, he was in a power-pop supergroup, Tinted Windows, with James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins, A Perfect Circle), Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne; wrote ***That Thing You Do! ***from the Tom Hanks movie) and Bun E. Carlos (if you don’t know Bun E. as the drummer for Cheap Trick, what are you doing in a music thread?! ;):D)…it got great reviews, but my new-music bandwidth is down to here so I haven’t had a chance to give it a listen…

…carry on.

As some who has long considered The Blues Brothers to be one of the top five films of all time, let me just say – that was awesome.

And just in case anyone needs a refresher on the original, or just wants to make comparisons – Twist it (Shake Your Tail Feather)

IMHO, I would have put Tay Zonday’s pic up, and had him play keyboard (to capture the Ray Charles aspect), but I like the video.

Uhhh is this the same Hanson that did MMMM Bop?

Yep.

What is that guitar that gets tossed to a Hanson at 2:58? The base is interesting. It goes like )
A friend suggested a Gibson Firebird, but the headstock looks pointier and the base of the firebird is like / not )

Something custom made - based on the Firebird look (all mahogany with a tobacco finish) and design (neck thru body, six-in-line tuners on the wrong side vs. Fender) but with a different body and slightly different headstock shape.

I haven’t seen that particular design, but have seen others - e.g., a Telecaster shape with a Firebird look

Hanson has been unfairly grouped in with other ‘boy bands’, but they’re really very talented. Not only that, but they’ve got good music taste and have written a lot of pretty good songs.

Hopefully they’ll get a bit more cred from this. Great video.

I’ve got to add another voice to the “these kids are actually talented and always have been” crowd. They were writing/singing/playing their own instruments back when they were just kids and they all have vocal talent and can harmonize beautifully. They are NOT in the “N Sync” or “BackStreet Boys” crowd at all. My oldest was a devoted Hanson fan and I listened to quite a bit of their music. MMmbop was probably one of their worst in terms of being “bubblegum”. There were many of their songs I really liked and they were genuine musicians with genuine talent. I remember telling people a long time ago that if they can break out of the bubblegum wrap that they would probably end up being popular with a more grown up crowd. Glad to see them still making music and - that video was fun! Thank you for sharing it. I can’t wait to tell my daughter! (Who’s now 22 and a mom! LOL)
