Happiness from Sadness

Sometimes good things can come out of terrible things:
In January 2009 my Mother passed away suddenly. At her funeral, the daughter of one of my neighbors met the son of a friend of my Mom’s. They started to date shortly after and a long story short, this past weekend she gave birth to their new son.

Even after she was gone, my Mother found a way to play matchmaker.

Sometimes good things can come out of terrible things. That was just something I wanted to share.

That’s beautiful. The cycle continues…

Thanks for sharing your lovely story. The truth is there are things like that everywhere we look. My husband and I would have never connected if I hadn’t been an active member of a mental health advocacy group. He saw me perform due to an extra-credit assignment for his psychology class and he e-mailed me the next day. As much as depression sucks, it led me to the love of my life.

Funny…I’ve often thought that you have to pay for every bit of happiness and good fortune in your life. I call it the Newtonian Law of Metaphysics - for every joy there must be an equal and opposite sorrow. 1:1, smiles:tears. And if you don’t follow it, your soul will never know rest.

I know mine probably won’t. My sorrows are phantoms, demons of my own creation, exchangeable for nothing but more of the same. You see, I made the mistake of never letting life punch me in the gut more than once or twice. By the Newtonian Law, then, I deserve pretty much what I have.

You could just as easily look at it the other way, though right? For every sorrow there is a joy.

Only for sorrows taken from life’s inevitabilities and accepted as such, in good faith and at full strength.

Only for the hurt you let happen - not the hurt you make happen.

The single greatest lesson I’ve learned from life, as phrased by the Dalai Lama: “Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.”

The details are far too complicated and private to go into, but two of the worst, most painful things that have ever happened to me eventually became two of the best things.
