No wisecracks about my age, now . . . I was reading a chronology of Manhattan and found out that four of the loveliest and most important buildings here are turning 100 in 2002:
• The Fuller Bldg., better known as the Flatiron (I know this is a favorite of many Dopers, from that architecture thread).
• The Algonquin (my personal favorite hangout).
• Macy’s in Herald Square (they’d been on 14th Street till moving uptown in 1902).
• The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Fifth Avenue facade was completed in 1902).
Happy birthday—gosh, architecture was a fine art back then!
Eve, you will no doubt love to know that from the men’s bathroom in our offices* we have a great view of the Flatiron’s backside. Rather like certain people I know, it’s almost as lovely as the front.
*The women’s bathroom is slightly larger than the men’s, but windowless.
Glad to read she’s still kicking around. I remember her from “To Tell the Truth” (or was it “What’s My Line?”)
I love the architecture from that time. One of my favorite books is Jack Finney’s “Time and Again,” and one of its covers features the Flatiron. Beautiful design.
