And Leon and Billy Paul.
Not many people know that Leon grew up to be a flight controller at NASA.
Hey, all you Barney Fife fans. Don Knotts is on Svengoolie tonight. In the great The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.
Yay!
ETA. Otis made a cameo, and Beas neighbor. Wow!
Well, it’s just Barney with another name. Crazy stuff. ![]()
My mistake. It’s Johnny Paul. Billy Paul sang Me and Mrs. Jones (I think).
Clara? She made the best pickles!
That might be my favorite episode
kerosene cucumbers!
“Dogs Dogs Dogs” is another one of my favorites. Andy give Otis a hangover cure that is full hot sauce and Otis has a great reaction.
“Atta boy, Luther!”
I kinda liked “Barney Gets a Sidecar”, cause, you know… Sidecar.
I had a Sidecar for about as long as Barney did. Despicable Creatures!
Don’t eBay drunk, People!
Probably my favorite classic sitcom. Even took a long road trip detour not long ago to spend the night in Mt. Airy (the town on which Mayberry is based) to check out the various Mayberrian sites (The Andy Griffith Museum, Pilot Mountain, Walker’s soda fountain, a recreation of the courthouse and Wally’s fillin’ station, and Andy’s actual boyhood home).
The funniest bits, to me, all involve Barney. In particular, when he was “reciting” the preamble to the constitution and when he was setting up the eavesdropping device in the cell with Opie.
I could go on and on with favorite bits and episodes, but I think I’ll nip this post in the bud.
mmm
Nip it!
Yeah, Barney was the heart of the show. It took a nosedive after he left. Warren was a poor substitute.
Well, anyone would have been a poor substitute for Don-as-Barney, really. Jack Burns was in a hopeless situation, poor fella.
Another favorite episode: “The Loaded Goat.” It veers more deeply into preposterous territory than usual for the show, but if you just go with it, it’s exquisite.
Andy Griffith knew Don Knotts was an asset.
He brought him in many of his later projects.
(I believe I’ve seen them together on a Love boat episode)
