Happy Asteroid Day

In my never-ending quest to introduce obscure holidays (previously: Aphelion Day and St Swithun’s Day) I bring you Asteroid Day.

Yes, it’s a day to celebrate the more obscure solar system bodies. Those effete dwarf planets get way too much attention. So let’s hear it for the little guys who toil in obscurity far from the bright lights. Asteroids!

Take an asteroid out to lunch today!
PS Next we need a day for Detatched Objects. Talk about being far from the bright lights…

I got to thinking about this holiday. It seems kind of ironic on what day they chose.

You see, once there was a space rock ambling along its orbit, not bothering anyone, and out of the …er … black comes this big planet and smacks the asteroid right in the face. The poor rock didn’t have a chance. And that’s the day they chose. Sad.

Sorry, dtilque, it looks like asteroids do not concern us.

“I mean, what did the asteroids ever do for us”

“Well, one killed off the dinosaurs.”

“Sure, getting rid of the dinosaurs helped. But what have they done for us lately?”
