Happy Birthday, Martin Van Buren

A long, long time ago we had a thread about obscure Presidents. Martin Van Buren got a bit of play. Well, today is his birthday and I’d like to wish him a happy one.

Here’s to you, Fox of Kinderhook, the Little Magician, and Matty Van.

Anyone that has a Wedgewood chamberpot is OK in my book.

Wow. That’s some classy shit.

He always gets a laugh at our house. We call him “Urine” Van Buren.

Well, that’s interesting.

But surely of less importance than today being the 68th anniversary of Prohibition being repealed.

We used to celebrate Martin Van Buren’s birthday in grade school. Of course, I went to school in Kinderhook!

Martin Van Buren is my alias i used when i sign up for stuff on the web! of course, i know him as Martin Van Ruin, and the Panic of 1837. (sounds like a children’s book title)

Or it being Walter D’s 100th birthday.

It’s funny, but in grade school they never taught us anything that happened during MVB’s presidency. He was just this wonderful red-headed lawyer guy from our hometown who got to be the President, yippee for him.

I guess when he’s the only reason your town is on the map of the state at all, you’ll look at his history through rose-colored glasses.

A little known fact is that MVB was a Unitarian (or a Universalist; I can’t remember). He is not one of the historical figures that we are usually proud to claim as our own.
