Happy Birthday Scott Joplin

Here’s an arrangement of “Something Doing” - https://youtu.be/ZXjJ5fwEEls

Love me some Joplin.

Happy 151st, Mr. Joplin. I wonder how far your talents could have evolved, if there were only penicillin in your lifetime.

Wonderful to be reminded. Thanks.

Solace (A Mexican Serenade) - rather unusual as it’s in fact a tango. Some may recognize it as the music that plays over the menu screens of Bioshock: Infinite.

^ Marvin Hamlisch left off the beginning 3 [sup]1[/sup]/[sub]2[/sub] minutes of “Solace” for the “The Sting” soundtrack. Pressed for time, I guess. Lovely song in either version.

My sister and I played piano, we love this stuff, unfortunately for me I was a mediocre player. Salieri to her Mozart, if you will. She could play The Entertainer like no one’s business, as a little kid.

I like this one too. (Bonus-cool ice sculptures) Sugar Cane Rag

One more. Easy Winner

I recently heard this version of Bethena, which is one of my favorites, done by a classical pianist. It’s a bit different, but I like it. I think it’s a eulogy to Joplin’s late wife, and this really captures that essence.

I painted a Scott Joplin mural on a club facade. That was fun. (Not!) Painting on brick is tough. I learned to use a precise air-gun to outline. I just got a cramp in my hand thinking about it.

Have you heard Joplin’s opera Treemonisha? It was largely undiscovered until the 1970s, and is very different from other operas I’ve heard.
