Actually Bill, we had cake with candles but the 446 candles caught the house on fire and well, we lost the cake. You’ll be happy to know, however, the girl inside the cake got out safely. Well… it turned out to be a guy dressed as a girl, but that was all part of the irony.
Happy birthday to thee,
Happy birthday to thee,
Happy birthday dear William…
Happy birthday to thee
Not his birthday, but the date of his death, April 23rd, 1616. That is also the date of Shakespeare’s death, by a remarkable coincidence, though (of course) they died 10 days apart, since Shakespeare died in England and Cervantes died in Spain.
April 23 is traditionally celebrated as Shakespeare’s Birthday, because the baptism usually occurs three or so days after birth, and Shakespeare’s was April 26, 1564. It’s a tradition only, but so what? It dates back to the 18th c. supposedly.
