A little late in the day, but I wanted to give a shout out to fellow Buddhists celebrating Bodhi Day. I’ve been a Buddhist for a long time, but this is my first year celebrating. This is the day in which we celebrate the enlightenment of the Buddha.
I started out with the ‘‘Buddha’’ documentary on Netflix. It’s fantastic. I find the life of the Buddha so inspiring. I can relate to this man; he went to great lengths to find the answers to the deep existential question of suffering. I’ve been trying to get in touch with my own ‘‘buddha nature’’ these days. Too much monkey mind, not enough mindfulness.
I lit a candle. Then I did some reading on ‘‘just sitting’’ meditation and then meditated for a while. The last couple of days have been frustrating for me, and I had some depression today. But was thinking, wasn’t that basically the essence of the Buddha’s teaching? That it’s in these messy moments when life is not going our way that we find the awakening we seek. The entire mood changed then. I was really able to just be at peace with the moment.
Going to end the day with a bowl of traditional milk-rice. So the story goes, this is what was given to Siddhartha when he realized his time as an ascetic was over.
Thus in the spirit of The Middle Way, I plan to get in some video games too.
How was your day?
