Happy Cranks-giving! (November mini-rants)

Oh, I’m sorry. Watching that decline is so hard. I currently have my 17 or 18 yo grey man sitting with me on the desk (in the way, of course). He’s gotten so frail-looking, and sometimes it seems like eating is just too much effort  He’s still essentially doing all his usual Mouse things, but it’s breaking my heart watching him age so much more rapidly.

I know your girl’s last days will be full of love and care, and I’m so sorry about the impending hole in your life.

Actually, that’s fine! I love those little roasted critters. Some restaurants call them Rosemary Potatoes, and I invariably choose them over mashed or a big baked potato.

ATK has a recipe for braised potatoes that is easy and very, very good. I’ll make those when I’m roasting a chicken. During Thanksgiving, stovetop space is limited, and you can microwave potatoes for mashing, so mashed it is.

My 17-year-old cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism early this year and, despite being very good about taking his medicine, has recently been losing weight. He’s eating and otherwise not showing any sighs of distress, but I am concerned.

Allie passed today (see post 68 in this week’s MMP for further info and a picture of her at her prime). So far as I could tell, she wasn’t in any pain, just reached her end.

DH and I suspect the UCDS of having some ability to see the near future, given the timing of when the kitten showed up and started trying to claim us. We’re now trying to figure out an appropriate name for a feisty little orange girl, but have already ruled out Ginger as too cliche.

My sympathy.
Some name suggestions:
Snowball
Pokey
Flip

Really, the name will come to you.

I’m really sorry. I’m glad it wasn’t painful for your dear one, but I’m sure it was and is emotionally painful for you.

Ouch. I’m sorry you’ve had this loss. Sounds like Allie faded peacefully which is a blessing.

Damn, I’m sorry. They leave such a hole. I’m glad you have a little orange spitfire to distract you a little bit from the loss of your friend.

So sorry for your loss…it still hits hard even when you know it’s coming.

I once had a very fluffy orange kitten which I named Pumpkin.

Sorry..

Snaps

DH is thinking something fire-related might also work.

Or Snappy the Cat!

“Kai” (rhymes with “high”) is fire in Japanese.

Or Ember is a cute cat name.

Blaze
Crimson
Ember

My cousin named all of his 3 children with fire related names lol!

Sometimes I hate watching people hang themselves. An employee contacted me, saying they’ve sustained an injury at work, so I directed them to contact our worker’s compensation carrier and follow their instructions. The next day I contacted the employee, asking if they got ahold of the carrier, and when they told me they were just going to see their regular physician, I once again advised them, for their own protection, to contact our worker’s compensation carrier and follow their advice.

I’m happy to report the employee took my advice. I’m unhappy to report that it took them almost a year to do it. Seriously, the incident date on the report is the same date from last year when I spoke to the employee about contacting our carrier. As is standard practice, the carrier sent me an email asking for pertinent information like job title, job description, salary, and when I first learned of the incent. I told them last year, so I expect they’re likely to deny the claim.

If someone from HR tells you to contact the worker’s comp carrier to report an injury, please follow their advice.

She hasn’t tried the rosemary version yet, but I did get a little packet of cracked rosemary for her.

That makes sense. We do have a good-sized toaster oven, so that’s where the tiny potatoes go to roast.

Last night, along with my grilled chicken drumsticks and brussels sprouts, I had small white potatoes. I steamed them, though, with parsley and pepper and added butter when finished. When I make an omelette over my FULL WEEK Thanksgiving break ( :100:), I’ll cut them in half and crisp them up in a frying pan. Ooooh la la!

Rant A
Part 1 For whatever stoopit logistical reason, UPS sends my packages from the big, regional center (that they also do local deliveries from) 8 miles away to the small distribution hub 25 miles from me in the other direction (IOW, they pass by my house). If, for any reason, I need to pick up a package from them, like I missed a delivery on a signature required package, which has happened in the past I need to drive 50 miles in a way I never go vs. 16 miles in my stomping grounds. Why they do this step I can’t figure out.
Part 2 I got an email from UPS on Tues - “Your package will be delivered tomorrow” It made that 30ish mile journey & got to 25-mile away hub at 4:56am, which should be enough time to get it onto the local delivery truck; however, I got another email from them yesterday - “Your package will be delivered tomorrow”.
If they did what was logical & delivered it from the closer hub I’d already have it.

Rant B
admittedly a very major rant! I keep a ChapStick in the car; actually, two are there now. One is a cherry ChapStick brand while the other is a company promo; looks like a ChapStick tube but unknown who makes it.
My lips are dry so I pull out the cherry ChapStick; however, the little wheel at the bottom is broken; spinning it does nothing to advance, or retreat, what’s in the tube; IOW, it’s useless. I put that one down & grab the other one & take the cap off. Clearly, by aroma, this one has been around too long.
Part of me says I should contact them; I’ll probably get a lifetime supply in free product/coupons. Part of me is it’s a (maybe) $2 item; it’s not worth my time.
I did have another promo tube in the house that I put in the car, but it’s base flavor, not cherry.

The promo ones are usually worse than worthless - they actually dry my lips out. Ditch it and get a 3-pack of real chapstick.
