"Happy F***ing New Year" on the Tonight Show?

I swear I heard the lead singer of Motley Crue yell “Happy fucking New Year!” just a minute or so ago on the Tonight Show. Did I hear right?

Apparently you did. My son heard it too.

oh god, here comes the FCC.

Thank Og, someone else heard it ! I was only half ass paying attention when I heard it and thought naahhh… So, No you weren’t hallucinating.

It wasn’t intentional, it was a vocabulary malfunction.

And the entire panopoly of the moral values hyenas.

I doubt he would use those words. I am sure that he said, “Have a fun New Year!”.

In the rebroadcast of the show (in the 2:30 a.m. timeslot) the entire comment was dropped from the audio, so it was well-noticed.

I understand why the first half of the show, leading up to the ball drop, had to be straight live-to-air, but for goodness sake, why on earth wouldn’t NBC put in a delay thereafter? It’s going to be that aspect of things which gets the FCC on their butts more than anything, I bet.

I hope Vince Neil has invested well.

Ha ha ha.

I assume this was broadcast at, er, New Year, which typically takes place at midnight.

Why the f*** anyone would even bother ringing to complain about swearing at that time in the morning is baffling.

Well, only a few very squeamish and righteous types, but they do it so often that the FCC could get thousands of complaints from just a handful of people.

Also, that midnight event was probably broadcast at 9:00 pm on the west coast. Not that it should really matter, but the self-appointed morality police don’t see it that way.

Jesus Christ, was that actually Vince Neil? He looks like he ate Whitesnake.

Zing!

Did anyone ever doubt the true classiness of Vince Neil?

Of course, if Mick Mars had smiled I think the world would have stopped revolving. Or something.

Of course, most of the people who will complain probably won’t have even watched the show. I somehow doubt that a lot of the kind of people who complain about this would have even been up at midnight, much less have been watching Motley Crue on tv.

Don’t underestimate the Offendees. Some people actually troll for these things. I did hear it too. I tell ya’ I thought my ears were burning. My Goodness, I couldn’t sleep. The trauma!

The show aired at 12:30 here and it wasn’t edited. Surely that would have been enough time to change it.

Yet, if this does become a big deal, or even a medium deal, I won’t be surprised in the least.

There may be no consequences at all, if Bono’s use of the word is a precedent. I believe it was determined that his pretty much identical usage of the term at a live awards show was not indecent because it didn’t refer to sex. Go figure.

Yup, Bono was cleared.

Even if the word had been used to refer to sex (which, when you think about it, maybe it was – there were no doubt thousands of people doing just that at the time) there may be yet another escape valve.

About 15 years ago when I was living in Florida, a local radio station used to play any-and-every-thing between midnight and some wee hour. They aired a disclaimer before the free-wheeling began, stating that these hours were not regulated by the FCC.

I have absolutely no cite for that, though, and have no idea if (a) they were right, or (b) if they were, that this is still true, or © if it is, whether it applies to broadcast television.
