Back at you. I never knew my bio father. My stepfather wasn’t a ‘daddy’ type guy, but he wasn’t abusive in any way, and my mother was. . .efficient. It wasn’t exactly your typical 50s/60s household. I think I did pretty well with my own kids, though.
Happy Fathers Day! Over the past decade, I have lost my father, my step father, and my father in law. On the plus side, I have a son and three son-in-laws who are now fathers. For two, it is their first fathers day with a child. So, circle of life.
There are no perfect fathers, but my kids all love and respect me, so I feel very lucky.
I have had a disastrous time personally with fathers and assorted father figures, but I love celebrating this day with my husband because he is the best father. I’m really happy to be able to give my kid that very special thing that I never had. And my son adores him.
I do plan on calling my grandpa though, because he’s the closest thing I’ve got, and despite him not being a good father to his own kids, he is a great grandfather.
I very rarely talk to my father. He cheated on my mom and they divorced when I was around 10 and, after the brief obligatory post-divorce period of trying to prove to the extended family that he really did care, swiftly dropped out of my life. No big loss.
The best lesson I took from that was not to do that and, when my older son’s mother proved to be a flake, took custody of him, spent some years on the single parent track, and later got married which makes the whole thing a lot easier. Have a total of two kids now and both get to be raised in a supportive household.
My wife is out of town this weekend and my children are terrible ( ) so I’m sure neither of them has a clue that it’s Father’s Day. At some point my older kid will wander out, mumble something about how he didn’t know what I’d want so he ‘owes me’ and that’ll be that. I’m honestly the only one in the family who seriously stands on ceremony for holidays anyway so I’m used to it by now.
A happy Father’s Day to all of you.
The high point of yesterday was the text message from my son and daughter wishing me a happy Father’s Day. Before the first text I didn’t know.
