Sunday was Yule, today is the last day of Hanukkah, Tuesday is Festivus, Thursday is Christmas, and Friday is Boxing Day and the first day of Kwanzaa. What holidays do you celebrate? Or do just hijack your way through the season.
My calendar is packed:
I celebrate Second!
I do Christmas, but if someone offers greetings for a different holiday, I’ll thank them for the well-wishing and not sweat what label got attached to it.
Kasya has definitely mastered certain vital catly skills, such as being a traffic hazard to humans walking around and being quite a bit less helpful at times than she thinks she is. It was a bit challenging refilling my pill dispenser with her participation, around her batting at my hands, chewing on the lids for the individual daily compartments, and stealing an extra bottle cap as a kitten toy (I have several “child proof” that my husband took apart to disable that “feature” and I move them between bottles when I start a new one). The way my prescriptions ship, I’m confident that no actual medication made contact with the cap, so I don’t think there’s any significant risk to her.
Managed to get a spay appointment for her via SPCA low-cost spay/neuter clinic, for 12 January. Keeping her inside until then seems like my best move. Yes, she does live with a male cat, but he got the snip years before she was born. ![]()
Lewis was the only dog that ever slept in my bed. And thanks for the warm wishes, metal mouse.
I will.
< sigh… > I remember when I had a Very Good Dog. Ollie, not so much. He’s way better than he was – but that’s a low bar!
Fortunately, he feels safe and comfortable in his crate, and my fears about him getting cold are all in my head. I’ve never seen him shiver, not once. He also has towels in his crate he can burrow under if he wants.
I celebrate Solstice, which is today, for about another hour. But very, very quietly. < woo! >
Happiest wishes of the season to everyone, whatever you celebrate! ![]()
I don’t celebrate any holidays. As a solitary atheistic mediocre human cis-het male, I live most days like any other, and don’t single them out in any particular way. However, if you were to pin me down, I suppose a secular Christmas is what I’d call it, mostly differentiated by specific foodstuffs.
I am just looking forward to three weeks break from work. I’m exhausted.
Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 8c/47f with a predicted high of 9c/49f and cloudy. Weather app says “It’s sort of gloomy as fuck outside. It’s like a fucking Goth weather day.” I would agree, it’s grey and gloomy outside, there’s not much brightness in the sky.
As a happy pair of atheists, we don’t really celebrate anything. I like to mark the passing of the seasons but again, we don’t do anything apart from quietly appreciate that we’re moving from one season to the next. Doesn’t stop me watching cheesy Christmas films though!
I am nominally working today although there’s not a lot going on, and I’m hoping that TPTB decide we should shut down early. There’s nobody in our campus office, we’re all working from home which makes much more sense to all of us. I’ve told my minions to check the inboxes periodically but if they would prefer to sit on the sofa playing with the dog and watching Die Hard, that’s also fine by me.
My plans for the day are to do a little bit of work (I have a couple of jobs that I can get on with in peace), grocery shopping at lunchtime, and the gym later. I suggested to ‘im indoors that I do the “normal” weekly food shopping today so that he can go to his gym at a time to suit himself. Tomorrow we’ll do the rest of the “holiday” shopping as that might involve two supermarkets instead of one.
Since I’m off to the gym later, I’ll get petrol on the way home, and possibly also call in at the pet store for cat litter and Muffin food.
Yesterday I watched the solstice sunrise come up through the lightbox at Newgrange, via the webcam they have there for this occasion. Newgrange is aligned on the midwinter sunrise. Or rather, it is aligned with the sunrise 5000 years ago, which is when they built this structure, in the valley of the Boyne. Anyone can tune in to the midwinter sunrise nowadays, thanks to the magic of the interwebs.
It’s nice to have a Christmas celebration associated with this event 5000 years later, even though the details have changed slightly.
SenGirl is better from her flu and back to her part time job. SenWife is off in Tokyo for work. SenBoy has to interview someone in a field he’s interested in for school. He likes sports and the school arranged for him to interview a sports trainer.
He did pretty good getting ready for the interview, coming up with a bunch of questions and such. He gets worried about things so we went over why it was going to be ok.
I took him to the place today and it looks like it went well.
We should be able to go skiing and snowboarding tomorrow.
Christmas isn’t a big deal here. It’s been borrowed from America, so they have Christmas decoration up, and some Christmas music going, but New Year’s is the bigger holiday. It’s not an offical holiday, so no time off for most people.
Our school is on winter break already. The winter break just started today so my kids are off. I don’t have to teach at my part time job at the school, of course.
We’re just mixed up here. Ya know, my mom is Jewish (so technically I am as well), I’m an ex-Baptist, and Music Man is an ex-catholic or a reformed Catholic? So, yeah, we just hang out and enjoy our time together with some Christmas decorations and a crocodile menorah that I just happened to find at the thrift store.
Praise the Lord it is Winter break and the poodle and I have commenced our Winter slothing
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 48 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 66 and sunny. The high on Christmas Day will be 75. Go figure. This mornin’ we shall procure provisions. We’ll get ribeye steaks from the burly butcher sto’. The rest we will procure from the Fud Kitty as there are some speshuls goin’ on and they usually have nice spareguts which we want for our Christmas feast. It will be the two of us, so steaks, company smashed N.O.T., roasted spareguts, sallit, rolls and chawklit pee-kahn pie will be on the menu. We will be bears who lunch at our favorite Mexican place due to a gnawin’ and a cravin’.
We celebrate Christmas, which starts with the Eucharist on Christmas Eve and goes on until Epiphany on January fifth. However, whatever you celebrate whenever it is, I wish you a happy, merry, joyful, blessed, or whatever adjective you prefer one.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, alas, I suppose I must purtify and don attire acceptable for bein’ amongst the great unwashed.
Happy Moanday Y’all!
I love the name of this thread!
Reminds me of the German language process of inventing new words by way of combination often resulting in some hilariously long and potentially unpronounceable vocabulary.
We’re Christmas folk here, but it’s very secular. Daughter hosts us for breakfast on the Eve, and that’s when we gift the grandspawn. On the Day, we’ve been going to my brother’s of late, tho we used to alternate with going to Ocala when the inlaws were alive. I kinda look forward to the day when we no longer drive the 2+ hours to my brother’s place. Nothing against anyone there - I’m just so done with spending about 5 hours on the road for maybe 3 hours visiting and eating too much. We’re at the stage where any Christmas could be my mom’s last, so we have to go. That sounds pretty curmudgeonly, doesn’t it?
Anyway, ho ho ho…

Otis has been good with his crate since the day he moved in. Last night, he was dead asleep in there before we knew he’d left the living room. He tends to move from room to room as he snoozes, so we didn’t notice right away. I just latched the crate door and clicked on the little radiator. I don’t think he needs it, but FCD frets…
FCD woke again with a nosebleed about 4 this morning, tho not as bad as the last one. After he got it stopped and cleaned himself up, I rinsed out the pillowcase (it’s in the washer at the moment) and spot-cleaned the pillow (which is now drying in front of the pellet stove.) He’s already messaged our GP - dunno if she’ll want to see him or if she’ll refer him to an ENT. But this is a bad time to be dealing with any medical emergency. Not that there’s a good time for a medical emergency.
Roxy will be here in about an hour. I’ve gotten the plan for today worked out - she wants to learn to use the sewing machine and a tote bag will be an easy starting project. That won’t take all day, but I’m sure we can figure out something else. I need to run to the credit union and I may run into Food Lion while I’m thereabouts. Or not. Whatevs…
I also need to go to the Mart of Wal, but that can wait till next week. I saw online that they have a rug like I want for the bathroom, but ain’t no way I’ll enter that store this week!
And I may or may not get the shirts I ordered for the kids. FedEx says tomorrow. They’d originally said Thursday (Delivery on Christmas??? I think not.) The company I bought from says Firday, but they’ve sent me at least 3 different messages about delivery, so I don’t pay attention to those any more. I hope the shirts do get here tomorrow, but since it’s FedEx, I’m going to doubt it till I have the shirts in hand.
One of my sisters is a big gift-giver, especially for the kids, so I invited her to come here next week while I’m wrangling them. (Daughter, SIL, and their spawn are going to his sister’s this year.) She’s about 90 minutes away (the southernmost of my sibs) so she may take me up on it. We will see.
And so begins the week. I should shower and dress before Roxy arrives. Or not. It’s not like she needs to be watched every second.
Happy Moanday and Happy Holidays!!
Whatever is or isn’t holy to you, be happy, when you can find the time.
Dang!
Could you order it online and have it delivered?
I celebrate a secular Christmas and Solstice.
Morning all. Slept until near 7pm and while not entirely well feel much more lively than yesterday. Will not push it and continue rest and medication prior to the trip to my brother’s tomorrow. 46F heading to 58F and tomorrow should be around 65F. Not exactly Xmas weather but I could get used to it (beats the heck out of driving in snow during Thanksgiving). Major accomplishment today will be packing for my trip and remembering to take everything with me (presents…don’t forget the presents!!). Just printed out my hotel booking and double-checked to be sure that I got it right.
I don’t ‘celebrate’ the religious aspects of any of the week’s stuff, being a confirmed agnostic, but enjoy the time with family and getting out of the house for a little bit.
Nettie, glad to hear Kaysa is fitting right in feline-style (so to speak). If she only knew what you had planned for her in a couple of weeks…

eburacum45, interesting place there, thanks for the information.
Sensei, glad the kids are doing well, and sounds like a holiday time tomorrow.
FCM, know what you’re talking about, I do 800 miles round-trip and hotel bills to spend a couple days sitting around a house and watching movies (often buried by dogs, which is a positive in my book). But it’s the only family members I know of and if were not hugely close they are my family and I will be there for them.
And glad FCD saw the wisdom of seeing medical folks for the nosebleed. Hope it is something not serious. ANd Roxy learning to use the sewing machine should be fun! Good luck on the gifts.
And that’s all for now, need to catch up on my Moanday webcomics and plan for the Shop-n-Sammich run for lunch. Have a good and safe and happy week all.
We don’t celebrate so much as acknowledge Christmas as a nostalgic remembrance; a holdover from our childhoods, I’d say, with decorations and music. We don’t exchange gifts or grace churches with our presence, but we do get together with relatives and try to treat it as a quiet time of year.
Good afternoon!
Today is day 3 of our 2 week break, so we “celebrated” by getting up at the normal time (with an alarm) and went to catch the train. Which was canceled. Not the best way to start the day/week.
Fortunately school’s off and most people are on vacation, so the substitute bus was fairly empty.
Made it to the doctor’s office with plenty of time to spare, and hubby now has an appointment for surgery on January 21st. Nothing too serious, but the annoyance level has been getting worse, so he’s ready to get it taken care of.
Went to the mall and picked up a LED star for the kitchen door plus some special foodstuffs. Had lunch at a yummy hamburger place (where I had a falafel burger, because I can) and now I’m letting food setting before going to the gym.
Besides having the holiday days off, and doing a bit of decorating, we don’t really celebrate. We’ll have French toast on Christmas morning, and I’m making split pea soup for lunch. Which is something else I need to do today - make a list to go to the store tomorrow morning. I really don’t want to go to the grocery store on Wednesday. I like my sanity.
I can, but it’s not worth the delivery cost - it’s a relative cheap rug and there’s no reason to pay half again as much for delivery. I can wait.
Roxy is here watching videos of her favorite band. I’m about to drag her out on some errands, then we’ll come home and have at the sewing machine.
It’s 24 Ferrets - ick!
