Time to start wishing the world a Happy New Year!
So Happy New Year, New Zealand and other South Pacific islands! You’ve got about an hour and 45 minutes to go.
So you’re probably out at a party or something.

YMMV:
Personally I’m on my Todd Malone, the ex has my kids about 1000km north of here and I’ve just finished a magnificent bottle of Rockford’s Basket Press Shiraz 1996 whilst watching a DVD of The West Wing season 4.
We’ve begun the year 2011 here and, with a bit of luck it won’t go pear shaped for at least another 16 hours.
Best “bloody oath kind thinkings” to the rest of the SDMB!
Just turned 2011 in Japan and the Koreas. Two more hours for us. We’re at home and will watch the city fireworks from atop our 36-story building. Always a good view.
We just got home a little over an hour ago after wandering around the Ratchaprasong intersection, always the center of New Year’s displays (which also doubles for Christmas displays, to attract the Western shoppers.) It was also Ground Zero for the red shirt protests and rioting earlier in 2010, and there’s still a lot of rioting and arson damage. There was also a heavy police presence, and we kept getting our bags checked for bombs. Good to know they’re keeping up on this. We still heard a security staff on the phone telling someone there were fewer people out than in previous years.
While I’m at it, I’m reminded that 10 years ago tonight, the very first act of this millennium for my wife and I was running for our lives on a Thai beach. We were spending the holiday in Hua Hin, a pleasant coastal town on our upper peninsula, maybe about three hours or so from Bangkok. The big fancy five-star Sofitel Grand Resort and Villa – which I think at that time may have been a Hilton property, not sure – on the beach had a big fireworks display planned for midnight. The wife and I wandered down to the beach to watch. Midnight came. suddenly we discovered we were right in the middle of the fireworks being set off!
2011 now in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Bali. BBC just showed the fireworks display at Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong, shooting out of the top of the 10 tallest buildings. Taipei supposedly had fireworks forming a dragon curling up around the Taipei 101 Building, the world’s second-tallest building, but it just looked like plain old fireworks to us. We couldn’t make out a dragon on TV.
We’re next!
Okay, so, hello from the future. It’s 2011 now. We do have hover cars.
The citywide fireworks were spectacular, as usual. And I managed not to fall off the building despite having drunk a bunch of Singha beer, so that’s an excellent start to the New Year.
It’s now 2011 in all of East and Southeast Asia, even Burma – which I personally regard as South Asia – as that country is half an hour behind us, and it just turned the New Year there about seven minutes ago.
Happy New Year!
It’s 9.22am on the first day of 2011 after a very pleasant New Year’s Eve. The fireworks were tremendous last night.
Checking in from the UK - our own fireworks were pretty good, haven’t checked the news broadcasts
I just sent a funny email to my friends: This year is binary code.
It is 22:49 on 12/31/2010.
It is 11 min and 11 sec before 1/1/2011.
It is 1:11 prior to 1/1/11.
It is 1111111.
Get it?
…I am not that funny. But I liked it.
Now three hours and ten minutes into 2011 here in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. Damn fine time has been had, and I’m only turning in this early because of football tomorrow. Just when it was going so well…
Just turned New Year’s in my old home of Albuquerque. Hawaii three hours from now.
Yay, the fireworks at the Space Needle were awesome! I wish I’d have gone in person. Next year for sure.
May everyone have love, health, prosperity and the best of luck in the new year!!!
Happy New Year, Kiddos!
I TRIED to be here at 3 (Eastern time), but I was hot and heavy on Warcraft just a’cussin’ and a’spittin! ;), and time just slipped by me.
So an hour late - my best wishes for a better and more successful 2011 to all of you on the left coast!
My pretty Dondra and our cat Bert send their best as well!
'Night and much love!
Q
Happy new year from Rome on New Year’s morning - Bear Nenno (sitting next to me) says “sup bitches!”.
Tell Bear I said “Happy New Year, from USUMBIJ”: Illuminatiprimus!
J/K with the name, but seriously wishing you both all the best!
Quasi
Happy New year everyone!!!
Well that’s exciting! Hope you two had fun!
I too was rather surprised when my car suddenly turned into a hover car at midnight. Of course, I still have to get it fixed.
Happy New Year!
We waited and waited and waited for you at midnight Quasi…and you never showed
Actually, I was playing WoW at the time too, and wouldn’t have noticed it was midnight if all the folks on TV didn’t start counting down. We’re all a bit under the weather in the Plankton household, to no big celebrations for us this year.
Merry New Year everyone!
