Harmonicas

Does anyone know of a good beginner’s guide to playing the harmonica? Also a good harmonica to get…I got a Hohner Marine Band but just read that it isn’t a good harmonica for beginners…Also does anyone know what harmonica (otive)was being played in “Love Me Do” by the Beatles…thanks.

It’s a chromatic harmonica (the one with the button in the side) in the key of G. Wouldn’t recommend you get one of those unless you’re a Stevie Wonder freak.

Not that there’s anything wrong with being a Stevie Wonder freak, you understand.

Just get one of those cheap book and harmonica combos. Any key’ll do for now. The first few months, you’ll be too busy playing ‘when the saints come marching in’ to care about the key.

Also, speaking of Love Me Do, here’s a cool essay on why the song is bit deeper (musically) than it seems: http://www.rmb.simplenet.com/public/files/awp/lmd.html

ok…how about Bob Dylan, does he use a Diatonic?

I am almost certain he did on my recording of “All Along The Watchtower” but I am not sure about any oh his other songs.

You can find a lot of good material following the links from:

Look under “Diatonic Harmonica Reference”.

Most popular music is played on diatonics. Most people play so called “cross-harp” - second position - as a matter of course. Sometimes I think I’m the only straight harp player left on the Earth (no remarks from the peanut gallery about the sexual orientation of harmonica players).

I LOVE Lee Oskar harmonicas, BTW. Much better quality than Hohner.
