Harper's Island - TV Show

I thought the first episode was “okay”. I did think the first murder, propeller-fu, was very contrived. I was a bit surprised at Uncle Marty’s death- it seemed as though the character had a bit of promise.

Right at the beginning they hit you over the head that it’s set in Seattle. As soon as we saw the dock area, though, my wife and I both said at the same time, “Vancouver”. The buildings in that area are very distinctive.

We liked it. They had to cram in a lot of exposition, so the story suffered, but that’s to be expected. I’m intrigued. I’m wondering how the writers will keep them on the island, though. I mean, the opening shot of the harbor showed a hundred+ boats. Surely it can’t be that hard to just…leave.

My early theory was that the first several killings would look like freak accidents, so only Abby would guess that there was actually a killer. And she, of course, would be written off as paranoid. Harry Hamlin’s death butchered that theory, though.

My guess is once the murders start ramping up, a boat full of extras + a main character or two will try to leave the island, and something disastrous will happen to the boat, therefore keeping everyone on the island.

I’m not particularly fond of any of the characters except the groom, dad and ex-boyfriend right now. But I’m as interested in it as I would be a B-list horror movie. I see it as a horror flick extended over 13 weeks as opposed to 2 hours. I just hope they use the extension to actually develop characters other than the main ones (bride, groom, Abby).

Noticed this was on OnDemand, so I finally got around to watching it. The ending was twisted enough to get me to come back for at least one more week, but I kind of had to force myself to watch the whole thing through to the ending.

Maybe I’m weird, but I just really had trouble getting past that opening card where they said it was Seattle. It wasn’t. At all. Maybe that lighthouse is somewhere in WA, but those condos, park, and harbor aren’t. I suppose that could have been Kirkland or Belleview, but that would put the island in the middle of Lake Washington. My best guess is that it was maybe Vancouver, BC , but the lighting had it looking more like LA or Miami. That just made the whole rest of the episode feel just that much more cheesy.

ETA: Or if I had finished reading the thread, I would have saw that Lightnin’ confirmed it was Vancouver. Sorry Light. It still bugged me though…
Also, that town with the murder mystery I mentioned earlier, I finally remembered where it was- Langley, WA.Apparently they’ve been doing it every year since '84.
