Harper's Island - TV Show

You guys seen the previews for this? It’s at the top of my radar for coming shows after seeing all the youtube vids on it and stuff…this looks awesome.

It’s a Turtletaub production and there are some awesome snippets of the show and he’s speaking really highly of it.

I’ve been seeing ads for it for a little while - during Dollhouse on Global the past few weeks mostly. Not very impressed actually, the whole ‘murder by elimination’ tv show thing has been done before, and it seems to me it never works out that well. I’ll probably give it a miss, and concentrate on the other favorite shows I have to catch up on.

I’ve got my DVR set, as my wife is really excited by it. We’ll see.

Is this the one that looks almost exactly like “Murder in a Small Town X”?

That was a reality show, this is a drama and it’s scripted. It’s 13 episodes, it’s already been filmed and shot and finished. This looks way better than that did as well because it’s all planned out and scripted like a thriller movie but more intense.

Perhaps a widely known fact, but the winner of this show, Angel, a firefighter from New York, later was killed in the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings on 9/11.

J.

I’ve seen the commercials. I have a hard time seeing how something filled with commercial breaks can be “scripted like a thriller movie but more intense”. I have no intention of watching it because I don’t care for thrillers.

I forget which one, but there was a small town in Washington State that did a murder solving weekend. You could pick up a guide from the town center and then you go to each buisness around town to get clues.

It has probably been about 15 years or more since, so I don’t remember any of the details, but, especially from a kid’s p.o.v, it was pretty fun.

Really?? I got the impression that it’s a reality show, too.

I just saw a commercial… either the new commericals are radically different than the first one I saw, or there’s another show coming out with a similar premise but really is a reality show. Hmm.

There’s no reality show coming out now that I know of.

Any one actually watch and like it?

I was mildly…ok…severely disappointed.

Might give it another chance…but I’m not sure.

A whole bunch of people, too many for me to keep sorte out, and most of whom I disliked.

As I said to Mr. Starving when it ended: I don’t care one bit which of them gets what done to them.

I was also disappointed but I’ll watch again. The first show might have suffered from having to establish too much background information. It was hard to keep up with the characters but I suppose as more get killed off it will become easier.

I must admit I don’t really care if I watch it again. I kind of wish I had watched the ER replacement show.

We DVRed it and didn’t finish watching the episode, probably will later, but generally we were less than enthused. The thing I’m wondering, though, is how is that first murder supposed to have been set up?

Presumably the guy didn’t participate in attaching himself to the propeller shaft and he appeared to be tied directly to it and not otherwise bound, so he must have been unconscious. I doubt that the boat had very recently been drydocked, so he must have been attached underwater. So the killer somehow drags an unconscious man through the water, all the while holding a regulator to the man’s mouth, and then manages to tie this large body to the propeller shaft? Working with an unconscious body and working underwater are two difficult tasks by themselves, much less both at the same time. Having two or more people makes it a bit more plausible, though not much less ridiculous.

And even if the killer could go through all that, why? There are about a thousand more ways to kill a person that are easier and just as “dramatic”. Just seemed like writer laziness within the first 10 minutes and it didn’t seem to get much better in the part I watched.

I also DVRed it and didn’t finish watching the episode. The overuse of jump scares with blaring loud noise blasts was annoying, and other than the propeller murder and the flashbacks to the first murders, it just seemed like a cross between a WB style young adult soap opera and a direct-to-video movie. Only character that seemed even mildly likable was the chick that was the best friend of the groom, and even then she wasn’t memorable enough to remember her name. I’ll be surprised if this goes past 6 episodes.

I’m going to give it another shot next week. Hopefully it will get better once it shifts to everyone freaking out over the murders and less relationship drama. Right now it feels like a big budget soap opera. Especially the ex-boyfriend named “Hunter.”

I don’t think we have to worry about it being canceled unless it does horribly. I think it’s only 13 episodes, so I imagine they’ll run the whole thing.

Actually it was right when they revealed “Hunter” that my brain went “romance novel name! RUN!”

Given that it’s on CBS, my expectations were very low and they were matched. :stuck_out_tongue: I’ll watch once more just to see if it improves a little.

One thing I will say, though, is: why did people have a hard time following the characters? It wasn’t like there were 300 of them or something. You had the bride, her pretty, rich friends, and her father plus the groom, his goofy friends, his best friend (main character) and his wacky uncle. Throw in two old flames, one on each “side.” Didn’t seem that complex to me. YMMV.

It was OK…and will probably keep watching.

The groom annoyed me somewhat…does he get paid by the smile? Rarely do you seen an actor smile so much you can count his teeth. Poor kid is going to die of lockjaw if this keeps up.
