I’m sure the couple have a good number of underlying reasons as to why they chose Canada as their home, and quite frankly, if I were them I would have chosen Canada, too.
I mean coming from Britain, why would anyone want to expose themselves to a gun-toting society?
The Royals have always enjoyed coming to Canada. It dates back to the Royal Tour of 1939. George VI was still a bit uncertain on the throne, after the abdication crisis. He and Queen Elizabeth did an extensive tour and were warmly welcomed across Canada. It apparently helped boost his confidence in his role, and Queen Elizabeth made it clear that she had great fondness for Canada, continuing to tour well into her eighties as the Queen Mother. The tour also played an important diplomatic role, recognizing Canada’s independence from Britain but also helping to maintain the connections in the run-up to WWII.
Harry has also been quoted as saying he enjoyed Canada, because of his relative anonymity. When he was in the British Army, his unit was in Alberta for training. He was seen in a bar in Calgary, and commented to the bar staff that he couldn’t do that «back home» - just go out to a bar for a couple of drinks. Given that experience, I’m not surprised that he wants to spend time here.
Sussexit 2. All it took was the PM (finally!) cutting off the dole in 4 days and a nationwide pandemic. Hope you enjoyed the millions of dollars in government funds, goodbye and adieu.
