Yeah, I was just watching it yesterday. The CGI doesn’t get decent until the third movie.
I finaly got to see most of it - in 3D (missed the very beginning.) I agree, Tom’s death was just wrong on all counts. Also all the kisses were disappointing. And Harry walking past Ginny after Tom’s death was just ridiculous. Of course he wouldn’t walk right past her. But the actress was incredible, that “hundred yard stare” was absolutely perfect.
Also agree about Hermio-trix; amazing acting job there. It could totally have been Emma in a really good mask.
Disagree about the Prince’s tale - I thought the acting wasn’t nearly raw enough. When he said “You said you would protect them!” I expected vehemence, anger, desperation, anything but that mewling complaint.
But the best of all IMHO was the job Dan Radcliffe did as a Father. Truly amazing. You could completely see that this was his darling son. These folks have really matured into fine actors.
And as always, I was disappointed with Dumbledore. No one has ever really captured that role as I wanted to see it. Like when they talk about the Tom-fragment he dismissed it with no semblance of compassion - Not the dumbledore I know.
The dragon was spot on, and beyond my expectations even after reading y’alls raves about it. I was still bothered the next day that they hadn’t removed all the chains from it’s neck.
The Foley work deserves every award available. Especially the sound of those stone knights hitting the ground. I was utterly convinced. In fact several things that were visual disappointing were sold by the sound effects.
Gotta see it again.
BTW - Neville said “I’m hot for Luna” Which I totally loved, it was the way I wanted it to work out.
I’m hoping they re-release the first 2 movies and clean them up. The later movies with the fly-overs of the buildings are amazing.
Actually, I was wondering why she didn’t go up to him. And actually, no one did. I think the first person to greet him was Hagrid. Admittedly, everyone was traumatized at this point, especially the families of the dead (such as the Weasleys) but still, Harry killed Voldemort once and for all. I was expecting him to be greeted more warmly.
Well, that was part of my confusion. Did they know that? Why wasn’t he telling them “It’s over, he’s dead.”
Two funny thoughts that occurred to me during the movie.
First, when Ravenclaw’s daughter said that Harry reminded her of Tom Riddle, I thought, but did not say to my wife (who was next to me) “Must be the similar noses”
When Voldemort welcomed Draco to the Death Eaters I did say “Bad Touch”
What spell does Molly use to kill Bellatrix?
The book just says “Molly’s curse soared beneath Belatrix’s outstretched arm and hit her squarely in the chest…”
No idea.
before the movie came out, i expected molly to blast bella backwards and impale her against a pointy statue thing. the scene was close. it did show a statue just behind bellatrix.
I wanted to hear Bellatrix say “I haven’t been cursed like that since grade school…” as she died.
I thought it was a very good movie, but I was disappointed by the same things many of you were disappointed by. What, the good guys die but the bad guys just blow away in the wind? No witnesses? No “Snape was working with Dumbledore all along” speech in front of witnesses? No “remorse” speech? No shouting, no screams of jubilation and relief afterwards? No poor, exhausted Harry having to touch and speak to dozens of people when all he wants is a sandwich and a good night’s sleep? No fixing his own, real wand (although I will go along with destroying the Elder Wand)?
The Prince’s Tale was great, heartbreaking stuff, even though I knew it was coming. Jesus, poor Snape. He knew years ago that there was no way he wasn’t going to die by Voldemort’s hand. It sure was lucky that he was able to give his memories to Harry, though – how else would Harry have known that he had to die to kill the horcrux inside him? Hmmm. :dubious:
Nitpick of the Year: Did anybody else think the typeface used for “19 Years Later” was all wrong? Too modern, too friendly, too casual? Yeah. ahem
Loved the very last shot, of The Three at the train station. Awww.
Overall I liked it a lot and I hope it makes a bajillion dollars, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn’t read the books. I spent the whole movie comparing what was going on to how it was done in the book (which I re-read before the movie came out).
Just saw it- I thought he said “I’m mad for Luna…”
I am hearing “hot”.
I will cast my vote for “I’m mad for Luna.” Although actually I thought he said “I’m mad for her.”
I think you’re right. First he says “I have to find Luna.” Then " I’m mad for her and since we’ll probably be dead before dawn I should tell her."
(paraphrasing the last part of the sentence)
“Mad for” seems like a perfect Brittishism.
ETA: if IMDB is considered a source…
Harry Potter: Ginny! Neville! Are you all right?
Neville Longbottom: Never better! I feel like I could spit fire! You haven’t seen Luna have you?
Harry Potter: Luna?
Neville Longbottom: I’m mad for her. I think it’s about time I told her, since we’ll probably both be dead by dawn!
[Neville runs up the staircase; Harry and Ginny look at each other for a moment, then kiss]
Ginny Weasley: [whispering to Harry] I know.
nobody thought that it looked a bit off since neville looked rather old and luna rather young? like a 20 year old with a 15 year old?
They’re the same year in school, aren’t they? Or if not, they’re certainly no more than a year or two apart.
luna is a year behind harry, neville and co. same as ginny.
On behalf of the Norse-who-shall-not-be-named, consider yourself warned.
seconded. i prefer harry and company. swords and hammers are no match to wands.
one gripe: hermoine granger, the most adept witch in her year, was never made up to look like a real cast-iron-bitch-of-a-witch, unlike bellatrix, or macgonagall.
