Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR BOOK 4

Cyn, Lily didn’t throw a spell at Voldemort to protect Harry; after all there is no counter-curse for the Avada Kedavra curse that killed Lily, and almost killed Harry (see book 4). Harry survived because she was prepared to sacrifice her life for him, and the strength of her love was stronger magic than any spell Voldemort could cast.

Max Torque, I think that when Riddle/Voldemort refers to Lily as a muggle, he means that she was muggle-born (a Mudblood), which is what matters to him, after all. There was never any question in my mind that Lily was a witch, and a very good one. This is taken for granted throughout all the books, IIRC.

Yes, I love the books just a bit and have read them all more than once  Yes, I am looking forward to the movie. But what I am really looking forward to is book 5, and I have to wait for it another YEAR! aaaaargh!

For the record, I went to the Harry Potter website…the sorting hat put me in Slytherin…

wooohoo!

It was my understanding that Book 5 is due to come out to coincide with the opening of the movie for Book 1; i.e., in November. Is that not right?

I’ve heard it is going to be delayed and not out until after Christmas; which must have her publishing house screaming in pain.

Lily is consistently referred to as Muggle-born, not as a Muggle. There’s a huge difference.

Harry is the only target who survived a direct confrontation with You-Know-Who. There are others (like Neville’s parents) who survived, after a fashion.

They’ve already started to film the second movie. Here is an article about how some of the filmed scenes for CoS had to be tossed because of some topless sunbathers. There’s some other articles on there, too. I didn’t bother to look around much, though.

The word around here (Perth, Western Australia) is that it won’t arrive until about September next year - it might be a month or so earlier in more northern parts of the world  It was originally planned to coincide with the release of the movie, but apparently Rowling refused to be rushed. Obviously I’m glad that she’ll have time to do it properly, but I don’t know how I’m going to wait that long!

Quoth SGoA:

Gryffindor, here. Funny, but I was rather expecting Ravenclaw.

Oh and to tell you, I hear the movie is practically a mirror of the book. So no good parts are left out for ‘timing’ and some crap like that.

Latest word is that if all the book was kept in the film as filmed, it would be four hours long. Clearly, for a kids movie, that’s too long. It’ll be trimmed to around 2 hours (which is in itself unusually long for a children’s movie).

Therefore, some scenes will be excised. Which? I dunno. Hopefully not the Mirror of Erised.

The fifth book – currently listed as Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix – may be published next summer, but even that’s a guess. Its US publisher (Scholastic) doesn’t have a manuscript yet, and doesn’t even have a date for manuscript delivery. So it’s definitely not coming for the movie release.

Chronos, my post gives a little background on Voldemort that comes out in Book 4, so it could be considered a spoiler. My abject, groveling apology for not putting a spoiler warning in. I would hate to ruin anyone’s fun.

After two - TWO - readings, my kids are asking every day if I’ll read them Harry Potter. I’m settling for Tuesday/Thursday and maybe Friday if they’re good. Wow. This is so cool . . .

Does anyone know the proper way to pronounce Hermione’s name ?

While reading the books, I always thought HER-me-o-ni or HER-me-ohn, BUT listened to the unabridged audiobook version of Prisoner of Azkaban and the English guy who read it (and did a great job, btw) pronounced it her-MAHN-ee. Since then, her-MAHN-ee sounds correct.

Not being familiar with this name, what is the pronunciation ? Has anyone heard Rowling pronounce it ?

Hermione = her-MY-o-nee. Like Hermione Baddely, or Hermione Gingold. (actresses)

Next book comes out when Joanne Rowling finishes writing it.

BTW, try the sorting hat again…the questions don’t matter, it’s a random house generator (har har har). Next time you try, answer the questions the same way, you might get in Ravenclaw or Griffindor!

I have read that the second movie is in pre-production, racing against the impending puberty of the stars. The third movie will start after the second, if (and only if) the first one is a big hit. If the first one is a disappointment, the second one will likely be made, but no more after that.

The Vanity Fair spread looks great! I’m dying from antici(pause)pation my own self!

Well… presumably Hermione does, and in Goblet of Fire she teaches one of the foreign students to pronounce it. It’s a cute scene, but I can’t quote it, so somebody will have to look it up.

Thanks, TDG. That would have to be definitive. I haven’t read Goblet yet.
Also thanks to Theobroma. Sounds likely but I’ll have to check the book. Wonder why the voice artist used ‘her-MAHN-ee’?
