Hartley Sawyer, who played Ralph Dibney, the Elongated Man, has been fired from the CW television series The Flash because of a series of tweets made in 2012 and 2014.

Sawyer — who plays Ralph Dibny, The Elongated Man, on the CW superhero show — was fired Monday as a result of tweets from 2012 and 2014 resurfacing that were degrading to women and where he called himself a racist. In one tweet, Sawyer jokes about being at dinner and “exposed myself as a racist, again." He said in another that he would “beat the hell” out of his wife if he had one.

In a joint statement, Warner Brothers Television and Berlanti Productions said:

“In regards to Mr. Sawyer’s posts on social media, we do not tolerate derogatory remarks that target any race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, or sexual orientation,” the statement said. ”Such remarks are antithetical to our values and polices, which strive and evolve to promote a safe, inclusive and productive environment for our workforce.”

This is reasonable material for a separate thread, because people may well be interested in this topic, who aren’t interested in the show itself. In fact, folks who don’t follow the show itself probably weren’t even aware of it before.

I know! Even if I believed that Belgians* were horrible, I’d have to be brain-dead not to think “Hmmm, that may not be a popular opinion, and if I just lash out online, it’ll be retrievable forever. And might affect my career, and probably my relationships.”
*I’m mellowing on that. I used to believe every “Belgians Have Ruined Breakfast!” conspiracy video I saw. But now I’m waffling…
