Harvey Fuqua Dead

Harvey Fuqua sang lead in a group called The Moonglows, a seminal Rock ‘n’ Roll act from back when Rock ‘n’ Roll was just another name for Rhythm and Blues. Well after that, he was known for his work in Motown and with other important figures in the development of the soul sound.

One of the first things I did with mp3 technology was to keep The Moonglows and The Orioles in constant rotation in my house. Even the worst of these sides was pretty boss, and the best were achingly beautiful. Most of all. Sincerely. Even Ten Commandments of Love, though it still irks me that they misused the archaic pronoun “thy”.

Harvy Fuqua was the nephew of Charles Fuqua of the Ink Spots, and his own nephew is Antoine Fuqua, who directed Training Day. He was born with a legacy, and he left behind a legacy.

One of those beautifully vocalized groups from the great beginnings of R&R. There’s no music like it today, nor has there been since the heyday of Mo-Town.

He also discovered Marvin Gaye.
