Has a web site ever changed your mind about someone?

I’ve had this experience twice lately.

The first time my mom offered to purchase head shots for me. She’d had head shots done for her business and recommended her photographer highly. I love my mom’s head shots. They look great and she’s a pretty savvy business woman so a recommendation from her is something I don’t take lightly.

But then I checked out the guy’s web site. It was a well built site and easy to navigate but in various places in the content I came to realize that I could never, ever possibly work with this guy. Nothing huge, just a couple of remarks that put me off, really off. Like the remark that he would play music during the photo shoot to help the subject relax and that he prefers contemporary Christian and country but will “put up with” anything else. That and pictures of his pickup truck. I’m all for personalizing your business site but, really, it’s just a truck. Previously I thought the guy was a talented photographer and now, well, now I don’t know what I think but I don’t want to go anywhere near him, his contemporary christian country music loving studio or his pickup truck.

Then, a couple of days ago, we score a gig and our piano player has a conflict. Mr. Jones and I are burning up the phone lines trying to find a sub but since the gig’s on a Saturday in December no one’s available. We decide that we’ll try a guitar player that Mr. Jones knows and I have heard. He used to teach at the same music store and he’s very good. We don’t have his number so we try looking him up on line. Cool! He’s got a web site…and then we read the promotional BS on the home page and after we stop laughing we realize that we can never, ever have this guy on a gig. Previously we thought he was a talented musician, now we think he’s a narcissistic air head.

So how about you? Ever had a web site change your mind about someone?

I used to be anti-Bush, then I visited the White House web site. Next thing you know, … BAM! Herpes!
