How about not voted for himself? I noticed it was quite a big deal on the news stations. Any other info about presidential voting?
Yes, at one time it was considered unseemly for politicians to vote for themselves. In his biography of Abraham Lincoln, David Herbert Donald relates that Lincoln wanted to vote in the local elections in Sangamon County in 1860, because everybody expected that the local election would be very close. But, Lincoln didn’t want to vote for himself. So, he made a point of tearing his electors off of the Republican electoral ticket before he dropped it in the ballot box.
I’ve never read a good account of when and why this changed. I suspect that it had to do with the introduction of the “Australian ballot”, in which voters checked off the candidates of their choice on a multi-party menu in the privacy of a voting booth.
