Has anybody done Nia?

I’m looking for an evening exercise class at my local YMCA. I’m open to yoga, pilates or some type of aerobic thing, but the one that best fits my schedule is their Nia class.

I had never heard of the this until today. Has anybody done it? Apparently it is some combination of yoga, martial arts, dance, etc. And of course the teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Good old Moshe.

Anyway, what was your experience?

Never heard of it, but I looked it up on youtube after your post. Here’s what I found. (youtube link). Doesn’t look like my cup of tea, but to each his own.

There’s also this one - which is a news story about NIA.

When I read the title, I tried to think back but the question wasnt quite what I expected so no.

Hmmmmm. Improvisation is not really my cup of herbal tea either. I can just about do the Grapevine and that’s it.

Maybe, I’ll go for the pilates. I’ve heard they’re really strict.

Interesting. I’d never heard of this either. But I did manage to find a place that offers a free first class, which might be fun to just try it out.

(I found it through the official Nia website Nia | Dance Fitness for the Mind, Body and Soul)

Sooo… According to the official site’s FAQ, a 40-hour one-week or two-weekend training course costs $1499. After only this, you are considered qualified to teach Nia. That is, if you pay a $420 or $520 per annum licensing fee. This “technique” could be fun to try, but it’s really looking like scam material to me. :dubious:

I was going to say “yes” because I thought you meant Nia Turnbuckle from high school (I mean, who didn’t?) But I see that’s not what you mean so, no, I haven’t. And won’t.

I was thinking of Nia Long from Friday and Boiler Room. Daaaaamn!

Oh, cut it out.

That’s it. I’m going for the pilates.

Nia… Nia… Nia Nia Nia… no, don’t think so.

Sorry if that sounded vaguely taunting.
