Has anybody ever gotten a whoopin' from a non-family member?

I’ve definitely gotten a talking to even from complete strangers. And if I was actin’ out while I was at grandma’s the neighbors placed a call to her to let her know before I got home. But I don’t ever recall actual corporal punishment.

I hear this meme from time to time when people debate time outs, grounding, etc especially from Black people.

As a black person I’ve heard this meme often. I suspect this is an exaggeration tied to the relative demise of corporal punishment.

Yes. My gym teacher spanked me when I was 6. My African Dance teacher spanked me when I was 9. My aunts spanked me often. My mean ass old lady neighbor spanked me more than once.

I’ve been spanked by close family friends and my grandmothers’ neighbor, and no one raised an eyebrow. I was misbehaving and that’s how it was (this was the mid-80’s by the way).

More often, though, they’d call my parents, and I’d get it from them.

Teachers, the principal, etc. The principals (high school principal had one as well as the elementary school principal) had fashioned 2x4s into paddles for this purpose. This was in rural Ohio in the '70s.

Oh I forgot about school. I’ve definitely gotten paddled at school.

My best friend and I were throwing snap poppers in a busy street when we were about 8 and hit a car’s driver’s side mirror while his window was open. We tore ass down the alley we were standing at the mouth of while the driver pulled around the block to head us off.

He caught us and jumped out of the car and (I have no idea how) grabbed both of us by the front of our shirts yelling at us while his wife/girlfriend pleaded for him not to kick our little asses.

He didn’t exactly whoop us but left a distinct impression on both of us (scared us shitless) lo these 25 years later.

Not that I blame him.

I’m pretty sure such a whoopin’ administered in the past 20-30 years would quickly result in assult charges for the whooper.

Roger that. My parents taught in the district, too, so I got another one when I got home!

No. My middle school had a corporal punishment policy (this was in the early 90’s) but I never got in trouble there. In high school they dropped the policy. It’s probably for the best, my parents would have gone ballistic on anybody who hit me when I was a kid, school official or no.

Yes, in school from elementary through high school from teachers and principals. I also got them from parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and the parents of my friends. That makes it sound like we were beaten senseless all the time but it isn’t true. It was just another form of punishment and didn’t even hurt very much. We preferred it greatly over the more drawn-out type punishments like extra chores.

No, but I didn’t cause as much trouble as the average child does. My parents were like omgzebras’, parents, though, and it wouldn’t have gone over very well if anyone *had *hit me.

Yes.

Small town. If you were at your friend’s house and acted like a little heathen, it was a given that whatever corporeal punishment was doled out to your friend was doled out to you as well. I got a whoopin’ from a couple of friends’ moms and one grandmother. The nuns at school had no issues with the paddle either, although I was never on the recieving end of more than a ruler myself.

missred (grew up in the midwest in the sixties and seventies)

The only one I recall was getting spanked by the school principal when I was in first grade. I remember it clearly because it was rather severe and left me bruised. That was one of (but not the only or the biggest) reasons I was homeschooled after that.

I also have memories of Brandy Beckwith getting the crap spanked out of her by Sister Raymond Pancratieous in the 1st grade for tracking mud in the classroom.

People! It’s “whup,” not “whoop.” “Whoop” goes with “holler.” “Whup” goes with “you upside the head.”

That being said, in 3rd grade of Catholic school, a priest used a ruler to smack me either on the knuckles or the palm for talking in class. Obviously, it made a lasting impression on my, since I can’t remember where I was smacked.

When I was in first grade, me and two of my friends were bored at lunch time and ran behind the curtain in the back of the lunchroom (there was a curtain back there because it served as an auditorium). There was band practice that day, so we started knocking on the door of the bandroom and then running away when someone would go to the door. Sr. Roberta (our principal) caught us and gave each of us a smack on the butt.

I think I got one at school once, when the whole class got one as a unit. But I’m not really sure. I do remember for sure that I begged my parents not to sign the corporal punishment permission slip the next year.

I may have gotten a swat or two from some close family friends, but I never really went anywhere as a kid without my parents. My friends stayed at my house, not me at theirs.

never once received a spanking from anyone but my parents. my first year of public school (grade 3), my mother instructed the principal to notify her by telephone if i misbehaved - she would walk the 2 blocks and beat me herself.

Everybody who’s hit me (the nun that slapped me on the face, or the other nun who would slap my bunched-up left hand with a ruler every time I used it to draw or write) has been either family or in a position of authority, except for that time a friend’s brother tried to kill me. My parents hit me twice unless you cound that horrid custom Mom got for a while of poking me (with a finger or a fist) and which stopped the day I showed her that she was causing bruises; now when she starts poking people we poke her back continuously until she yells uncle, and she remembers not to do it for several months.
