Has anybody tried Body for Life?

I’m 36 and more ‘O’ shaped than ‘V’ shaped. I’m determined to amend this, and while I don’t care about going from Burl Ives to Brendan Fraser in two months, I do want something that has definite results and a lifestyle I can live with. Of the plans I’ve checked out, Body for Life seems pretty good.

Has anybody here tried it? If so, how’d it work? What are the worst parts?

Any info appreciated-

Yours,
Uriel Sampiro

Yes.

The worst parts are that it isn’t much more sophisticated than other plans.

Does it work? yes…but it does seemed more geared towards folks who are more bodybuilder oriented.

Most of the fitness crowd I know leans towards the founder being a bit a a steroid user, and we don’t trust the photos of the people who mail in results.

Some of the results are so bogus, it discredits some basic good advice about exercise and portion control. And some of the claims about supplements are way too much.

Body for Life: portion control when eating and exercise.

Not very ground beaking.

I would suggest you get familiar with nutrition, how many cals you should eat, etc, etc.

go here first and save your $$$

Thanks.

The part about the book that bothers me is the “Oprah-Choprah- feel good and fondle your inner child” testimonials, so basically I skipped that, plus like most “before-after” shots you’ll notice that the “after” bodies are in better lighting, oiled, posed in flex position, etc., so I wasn’t sold on that. The main things that appealed and that I wondered about are these:

—statements that workouts in the morning are many times more beneficial than later
—insistence on a short high-intensity workout rather than a longer lesser intensity workout
—the diet allows carbs as well as protein (I don’t trust the high-protein/low carb diets even though I know people who’ve lost 50 lbs on them; they just don’t “sound” right)
—the workout division into upper body days and lower body days and no cardio and weightlifting on the same day
Does anybody know anything about Myoplex and recommendations for or against it as a supplement?

I lasted about 2 weeks on it.

My mother managed to go about 6.

The food list is really restrictive if you’ve got any hangups about food at all - There were only about 4 or so combinations that I could eat, and I ate 6 times/day (as the program specified). By the end of the second week, I was so sick of the food that I went off the program.

Before she quit, my mom could see some progress (muscle definition) with the weightlifting half.

All quotes from Sampiro.

I’ve heard this claim a few times, but I haven’t seen any particular evidence. FWIW, I work out at night, and I’m doing just fine.

IMO, this is good advice, simply because it’s hard to get bored when you’re giving it your all.

There’s a thread over in GD going on about these (OP by stoid). You might want to check that out.

Good advice. My split is a little different: on one day, I do the “big lifts” for my upper body, and a bunch of little stuff for my waist and legs. And vice versa on the other day. I like this because it makes it very easy to avoid using the same muscle twice in a row.

Also, be sure to check out http://www.exrx.net/. It’s a free source of excellent info.

But doesn’t Body For Life specify one day a week where you just eat what you want anyway?
