Has anyone flown Icelandair?

My wife and I are going to London in May. Icelandair seems to have the cheapest flights out of Boston, with a change of planes in Iceland. I have flown on (then) Icelandic Airlines back in 1974, and back then it seemed very nice. Actually quite luxurious to an 18 wear old kid. The airport was a bit shabby, but we were not there for long.

How are they now?

We flew them from Boston to Heathrow for our honeymoon. They were fine. Nice flights, as comfortable as you can expect, and no real problems (luggage, etc.). The airport is fairly modern, although large swaths of it were under construction in 2006.

I’d bet that RedtheWorm can give you even more perspective.

My ex-wife flew Icelandair from Heathrow to Reykjavik, on her way to study Modern Icelandic. It must have been a decent experience, because she HATED to fly. IIRC the ticket prices weren’t outrageously expensive.

I haven’t although I know plenty of people that have and I intend to at some point. The friends that did it got a free layover for 2 days to see Iceland as well and then continue on to Europe proper. I don’t know if they still offer that but that seemed to be one of their major selling points for an airline based out of a tiny country.

Details, details.

(Also, :smack:.)

We did a 2 day layover on the way back. We really should have done it on the way there, as we were exhausted by the time we got there and couldn’t muster up the energy to do much of anything.

One thing to note if you plan to have a layover: the airport is NOT in Reykjavik. It’s in Keflavik, which is a tiny town across the bay from Reykjavik. We were just too tired to take the bus all that way, and a cab would have cost about $100 each way.

Keflavik is a nice enough town, but there’s nothing to do there.

I have flown them 4 times. Very good, all new aircraft, and excellent cabin service. The overnight layover in Rejkjavik is well worth the $260.0-you get a tour and breakfast and lunch. Iceland is a fascinating country , and the people are super nice.

I flew such a looong time ago that my input is probably irrelevant now, but what the hell.

My family used Icelandair to and from Paris one summer. The service and food were very good, the planes were very clean and comfortable, and in general the whole experience was a lot more pleasant than usual (normally we flew TWA or Northwest/KLM).

The only downside was changing planes in Reykjavik, but that was minor (Reykjavik airport at the time was small enough that getting around was trivially easy, but big enough that there were places to eat and shop). We decided to stay in Reykjavik for a weekend on the way back and had a great time, it’s a beautiful place.

OK, I’m sold. We won’t be able to do the overnight, although that does sound like it would be worth it. My wife just gets this block when she hears the word “Iceland”. I’ve told her that for us, Iceland would be just a stopover for an hour or so. She was quick to tell me the other day how the government collapsed. I explained to her how that did not really mean what she thought it meant.

Thanks everybody.

I have also been following WormTheRed’s thread with interest.

Thank you.

Icelandair just finished upgrading all their planes so now you have a nifty personal screen you can play all sorts of movies and games on. Also, they just finished a major upgrade on Keflavik Airport so it’s pretty decent, even by int’l standards.

Especially since it’s still small so there’s no hassle with getting from gate A1 to gate Z369 fifteen miles away

If you have the time, you should stay over a weekend (Icelandair offers free layovers), just to be able to tell people that you’ve been here. And things are pretty much the same as they were in December when Richard Parker* got this experience.

In case you come and go on the same day, you’d still take the chance to visit the Blue Lagoon, which they offer tours to from the airport.

If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
