Has anyone here read Michael Moore's "Dude Where's my Country"?

Geez, and here I thought I was starting to pine for the fnords.

If I’m not mistaken, these are the words and syllables that were stripped in your original OP, for some reason. Why is this? Is it because… the library automatically strips words from your posts? Or… because you’re afraid to offend someone? If the former, for the love of Og, why would a fucking library do this?!??

school library, there’s a filter installed that in its infinite wisdom decided to remove words or fractions of words that are potentially offensive or could be some threat against the building.

That’s what I thought. So I guess doing research on 9/11 attacks is out of the question, at your library? That is so fucked. I’m surprised that you can even access the Pit. I’m not lashing out at you vinniepaz, but that is sad.

well it’s not what i would call excellence in programming. its actually really random when it stops me from accessing something, and i can get in to most any site, but for some reason it decides that im not allowed to SAY anything threatening…

You know, politics always goes better without the helping of self-satisfied persecution fantasies. It’s bad enough when the Republicans and other conservatives on the boards do it, but at least they’re actually-factually correct about being outnumbered (I don’t know your political affiliation, so I’m not assuming anything about how you vote.) However, what evidence is there that Michael Moore is anything resembling popular here? He’s inspired a hell of a lot more condemnation (at times perspicacious, at other times spurious) than unbridled support. Be straight up and defend your own view; don’t fall back on the old trope of claiming to be the brave, persecuted minority. It’s an empty argument when it’s true, and it’s even worse when it’s not.

That from a guy who still believes in Iraqi WMD’s, the Swift Boat Vets, and probably the Tooth Fairy.

Yeah, Moore would be more convincing if he were less polemical - convincing to the convinceable, that is. Doesn’t make him factually wrong, though - the tighty righties have done their best to find something, anything, and the best example so far is that “My Pet Goat” was really titled “The Pet Goat”

Slightly off-topic… Every Santa Cruzian that doesn’t worship every hair of Moore’s beard warms my heart a little bit. Most of my friends who went there are scary- they parrot what he says without attempting the slightest bit of critical thought, and will not hear of any dissention. Kind of ironic, considering their biggest complaints about who Moore goes after the most…

Didn’t the Coca-Cola Company attempt a similar tactic in the early 1970s?

You just described most people on this board.

Moore may in fact be a pretty bright guy, but he’s got an audience to play to. He knows as well as you, me and Karl Rove that the general public does not absorb detail or nuance.

But of course, “Elvis lives”. :dubious:

No. He isn’t a good filmmaker, nor does he have a clue about comedy or satire.

I’ve seen 8mm home movies shot by 10 year olds that outclass Moore’s crap.

And he’s a big doodyhead too!

Why is it that there’s never any substantive explanation of what’s wrong with him? I mean, don’t get me wrong, he’s a showman and I don’t worship the ground he walks on, but the complete hatred so many people feel for him has never been adequately explained. To me, it suggests that a lot of folks are either blinded by their own political differences with the guy or just victims of the propaganda campaign against him. But I’m willing to welcome other ideas if anyone actually cares to offer them.

Gimme a break. The guy has made the documentary a popular genre. I pretty much agree with Sam; he’s a good filmmaker and a decent comedian that makes some fairly weak arguments.

I will add though that, in my opinion, his heart is in the right place, even if his mind isn’t always.

The truble I have with folks like Clothahump is that you a priori dismiss Michael Moore simply because you disagree with him politically. You make no specific criticisms of his work, and I bet you’ve never read his books or seen his movies. You are evry bit as clueless as the hippies who swallow his line uncritically, and I find it difficult to have a literary discussion with pod people. “Bush is a wise leader. Here, take this large, green pillow to bed with you, and you’ll agree with us when you awake.”

If you want to go after Moore as a writer and filmmaker, attack his penchant for inserting himself into his films, his sloppy fact-checking, his attraction to ridiculous conspiracy theories. For example, in Fahrenheit 9/11, he wastes film discussing tenuous links between the Carlyle Group and Bin Laden and the supposed conspiracy to topple the Taliban to get a pipeline built for Unocal. He spent too much time proposing stupid answers to the Buh regime when he should have posed more incisive questions.

Compare Moore’s work to John Stewart’s on The Daily Show, and you see how shoddy Moore’s is when ranked next to a master of political satire.

Why is it that every time someone writes a well-reasoned criticism of Moore, they are always accused of being blinded by political differences or victims of anti-Moore propaganda, and written off?

If you disagree with my points against Moore, that’s one thing, but I get so very sick of being accused of being part of some hive mind that is, for some reason, incapable of rational thought, just because I dared to say, “hey, I think Moore got this wrong.”

My political views are pretty similar to his in theory, and where I live, there ain’t a whole lot of Moore-bashing. I still think that Jon Stewart’s indictment of the Crossfire hosts would fit Moore perfectly. Is it really so hard to beleive that a rational, aware, thinking person wouldn’t like Michael Moore’s work? Is the fact that he (gasp) publicly speaks out against President Bush really enough to make him such a sacred cow?

…and thank you to gobear for illustrating my point beautifully.

You know what, gobear, I reacted too quickly to your first paragraph, and I now realize I read your post all wrong, I’m sorry.

I’m going to go see if I can clean out this bullet wound in my foot now. :smack:

Haven’t you been to Vegas? Elvis not only lives, he’s gone and cloned himself all over the place.

Don’t even get me started about the “Chinese Elvis”…

Michael Moore on the Left.

Pat Robertson on the Right.

Each side has its idiots. It’s all about balance.
