Has anyone stayed in an Ashram?

I am hoping someone here has spent some time in an Ashram and would be willing to share their experience.

Where did you stay? Why did you go? What was the application process like? How long did you stay for? How did it change your life and you as a person? What were the ups, and the downs?

Thank you:)

I have. Whoa. Mine was local, down by Exit 16 on the Thruway, near Woodbury Commons, near the Tappenzie Bridge, in NY.

But not for the *ashram *part of it. My dance teacher (Kathak) lived there, and I would go for up to a couple of weeks at a time to take classes and take part in small performances, over about 8 years.

It was a simple, nice life. Food was always iffy since volunteers cooked it. I know for non-dance class people there was a “recommended” donation per day. I don’t know what the application was like since I went through dance. The people were very nice. There were daily prayers, and there was a sadhu or sage who ran the place. I went to see him about once a week. He liked to know who everybody was who was staying. He was very old and quite nice. He used to come watch us dance.

There was meditation time, too. I didn’t meditate much. I was pretty much dancing for every spare hour of the day.

I met lots and lots of people. I noticed people tended to leave their problems behind. I met people I normally never would have. It was a great experience.
