Okay, I wasnt sure which forum to put this in, but I guess IMHO will do.
I’m thinking of trying of those pills I keep seeing advertised on TV , you know dexatrim, Metabolite whatever, other than the obvious ephedra risk thing.Have any dopers tried them, if so, any bad side effects, unwanted results, anything?
Diet pills arent good for you and most fad ones dont work. All they do is mess up your system and when you cant stand what it does to you and stop taking the pills, your weight comes back with interest.
A healthy diet and exercise is the only way to go. You have to change your lifetsyle for your weight to go down and stay down.
Hmmm, Good point, I guess I’m just getting a little frustrated, I’ve never been very quick to lose any weight , even when I diet and excersise for a good amount of time, I always figure that when I start to actually lose weight that it’ll keep me on a diet, but I never do really lose weight so i always quit the diet
I’ve been on roughly the same diet as wmulax for the past 3 months, basically one meal a day of a relatively medium sized salad, with no dressing or croutons , and water on the side. I run for at least a couple miles whenever I have the free time, I try to go to the gym every day. so far I’ve lost less than 10 pounds. has my mind been swayed by slim fast commercials or is this taking way too damn long?
Flowerchild, is that ALL you eat during the day? If that’s the case, no wonder you aren’t losing weight - your body is probably in starvation mode and holding onto anything it can.
To lose weight, you need to eat a balanced meal, not deprive your body of energy. I don’t know what you weigh, but I’ve been doing WW for a good 2 years (yo-yoed back up because of an accident, just now getting back on track), and eating steadily during the day has helped me lose. I usually have a banana and an English muffin or something similar for breakfast, I’ll have either a frozen meal (Lean Cuisine is my favorite) with extra veggies (green beans or peas are my faves), or I’ll fix tabouli or something like that. Then I usually have a snack in the afternoon - cottage cheese and fruit, dinner is a small helping of pasta or a small sandwich with more veggies, and I’ll have a snack later. And I do lose weight on this - very well. It may look like an enormous amount of food, but it’s really not - however, it keeps me satisfied and I lose weight.
I highly recommend using a website like Fitday. It will keep track of your calories. I would also recommend Weight Watchers if you can afford it. I love it - I think it’s a great program. There are a LOT of good programs out there (I also like Atkins’, don’t stay on it because it’s just not for me, but I do think it’s a good program), but I recommend WW because of the accountability.
However, you have GOT to start eating more than that every day. You are more than likely killing your metabolism right now.
Something is working for me marvellously well these last three months. 20 pounds has just faded away (and that’s not counting five pounds when I had the stomach flu).
It’s what I do, not what I hold back from doing.
I do eat my fruits and vegs each day, I do excercise every two days, I do eat both red and green each day.
I only eat what I want, I look for healthy stuff (ie I do healthy fats like walnut oil, and little fast food) although not super-disciplined–I get in my MDR of chocolate. I avoid pure white starches and sugars, but not fanatically.
It’s never been to my advantage that I like to eat almost everything, but now by making sure to eat the healthy enjoyable items, I’m doing fine.
I’m flabbergasted by how painlessly I keep losing weight.
There’s your problem Flowerchild, you’re starving yourself. You need three meals a day including a variety of foods. You want to lose weight to be healthy and feel good? Starving yourself won’t get you there.
I didnt mean to put on that I’m starving myself because actually, the salad is all I really need, I just meant to say that the meall itself was so you know, Low fat. I’ve almost always just eaten a meal a day, exect when not on a diet it was a taco and a coke or something equally fattening.
My next method of weight loss and beautification is a big knife to problem areas. I’m gonna just cut it off and kick it off the balcony. And laugh. Bwahahahahahahaha I’m thin! I’m beautiful! I win! Bwahahahahahahahha!
I guess I never realized i was doing anything wrong, I’ve always been pretty full after that one meal . although my mom used to think i was anorexic or something because i never ate much.
I don’t mean to be intrusive or anything, but are you anorexic? You say you’re trying to lose weight - are you actually overweight, or are you trying to force your body to get to an unrealistically low weight? Do you know your BMI or your percentage of body fat?
I would suggest eating a sensible, balanced diet (and a handful of dry greens is not that diet) and getting a reasonable amount of exercise every day. Your body will get to a healthy weight if you get in the habit of doing that.
I have tried a number of diet pills including some with ephedra like Stacker 2. I actually did lose about 30 pounds over a 3 month period using it. Of course I also cut my calorie intake in half. I’m sure that helped a bit. However, what I basically ended up doing was starving myself. So, after I went off the diet I ended up overindulging in high fat foods. And you guessed right, the weight came back. Diet pills (if they work at all) will only help you lose weight in the short term. In the long term, you will almost always gain the weight back once you stop dieting. For me, ephedra did work, but only temporarily. If anyone is thinking of using ephedra I’d stay away from it. When I took it, my heart would race the entire day and I would feel incredibly anxious. I felt like I had drank a gallon of mountain dew. After about 9 weeks of using it I got really bad stomach pains and just decided to stop taking it.
As others have stated, healthy weightloss comes by a change from living an unhealthy lifestyle to living a healthy lifestyle. By going from eating foods high in fat to eating more nutritious foods. Not by going from diet fad to diet fad. I recommend getting with a nutritionist or personal trainer and figuring out a realistic diet plan that’s right for you. Set realistic weightloss goals and do your best to achieve them. Be sure to eat three meals a day with snacks inbetween. This will keep your metabolism in high gear and will help you burn more calories. This is what I have recently done I am proud to say I have lost fifteen pounds without the aid of any diet pills or supplements! That’s only half the weight I lost before but the difference is that this time I have managed to keep it off and I’m continuing to lose more weight. Sure, the weightloss has not been as fast as before but alteast the weight is staying off this time and I’m not starving myself. I’m still on the look out for that “miracle” diet that will truly help me lose tons of weight fast, but this is very unlikely to ever happen. Best of luck to you Flowerchild and to all who are struggling with losing weight. It’s not an easy road, but one we must all go down if we want to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
I’ve lost weight recently, and I did sort of use that Xenedrine EFX stuff. What I did was take the stuff for about 2 weeks, and because not eating required no restraint, I ate only small and balanced meals to keep things going. After I had these good habits in place, I quit taking the pills and commenced working out and losing weight.
They can be a good tool to get yourself on the right track, but they’re terrible by themselves.
Then there are also those pills that work by blocking the digestion of fat, so it passes through your system instead of being absorbed by your body. At one point most of the women at work were using them, and waxing lyrical about how the weight was dropping off at the rate of several pounds a week.
Unfortunately, because they weren’t digesting the fat, it was coming out the other end in the form of greasy slime. Sometimes, it came out when they least expected it, such as when bending down to open the bottom drawer of a filing cabinet. Hilarious for us, mortifying for them. Needless to say, it didn’t take them too long to abandon the “magic pills” and go back to sensible eating and exercise.
One meal a day, a salad, was exactly what my sister ate when she was anorexic. We finally managed to get her help when her hair started to fall out from malnutrition. Please get yourself on a more reasonable plan, it’ll be healthier for you and work better anyway. My nutritionist friend (a smarty pants phd. not fly-by-night hack) swears by most of what Dean Edell suggests, but IANAD so I encourage you to speak with yours first.
A word to the wise, your metabolism may be a bit out of whack for a while, so don’t panic if you don’t lose or plateau at first. Good luck-- I’ve got about ten pounds to go myself and I dream of just doing a little home surgery, like Qazzz.
