Some location in Florida gets hit at least once a year, but I don’t recall the city of Miami ever getting a direct hit (although Andrew came very close). Has it ever happened? What would happen to Miami if hit by a 20’ storm surge?
Sure. Miami was hit directly in 1926. The eye of Andrew also passed about 15-20 miles south of downtown Miami, which is pretty close in meteorological terms.
I also seem to remember a story about a hurricane in the 1940s that threw a large ship several blocks inland in downtown Miami.
