Category 3 Hurricane Michael to Hit Florida Panhandle Wednesday [Oct 2018]

And the Carolinas will be hit with more rain later on.

Any Dopers live in the area affected?

It’s been upgraded to a Category 4 hurricane:

It is now well past time to be gone from the florida coast.
The shelf is unusually wide in that area. The storm surge will have a long way to build up. 10-12 foot surges are likely. No one will be around after a 10 foot wall of water rushes by. After Katrina along the MS coast (a similar situation) people couldn’t find the roads in their subdivisions never mind the houses. Nothing will be left.

I’m in Orlando(ish). We’re getting some wind and rain, but not the brunt, thank goodness. This one came up fast and is a big 'un.

the eyewall is coming onshore now: ABC has it live on TV and on youtube. the reporter in a hotel on Mexico beach said her patio door is supposed to be hurricane proof and it’s bowing. holy cow.

since I don’t get the weather channel on my TV, I watch it live for major hurricanes…except this one. for some reason, they are not live on youtube. I find that odd.

this thread is so short I assume there aren’t any dopers in the panhandle?

Either that, or they are a little busy right now.

Stay safe everyone!

Actually, it hit Category 4, so we’ve officially had a Category 4 hurricane in the middle of October. No worries about the climate, though.

heck, yes.

the ABC reporter’s voice is shaking while she is describing a house on the beach just destroyed.

I’m glad she isn’t outside!

I live in Gainesville(ish) and I’m deeply glad we’re only getting the edge of this one. We’re already having flooding problems in my neighborhood, and it doesn’t take much wind to pull down some big branches. I hope everyone is safe.

We’re getting some hard wind and rain here in Orlando.

Came ashore just east of Panama City Beach. There goes a boatload of that fine white powder sand.

weather.com says there’s been 155mph sustained winds. The gusts have to be insane.

The farmers in S. and Central Georgia are going to be hit hard. A lot of crops are just nearing harvesting stage and now … they won’t. Yet another pecan shortage predicted.

The edge of the rain is entering Atlanta. It’s humid as can be right now. Rain will be here soon.

How’s everyone doing? The pictures of the aftermath are heartbreaking.

We just got some light wind and rain where I’m at (SW Alabama).

That storm came out of nowhere and strengthened very quickly.

Sad to see the photos of the damage in Panama City. I was just there back in June.

Some friends of ours from Tallahassee were unable to evacuate due to vehicle troubles. Thankfully their house didn’t suffer any damage, though they have downed power lines laying across their driveway.

On the “good” side of the storm. Got 3.1" and some mild wind.

Yeah, those videos showing shopping centers up to their eaves in water with debris sloshing around are scary. What that kind of surge does to frame homes is unimaginable.

Cocaine?

(In case it’s a serious question.) The beaches along there are famous for very fine white sand. It’s almost like walking on powdered sugar. And if you though regular sand got everywhere …

Mexico Beach was apparently hit worse than Panama City. Anyway scroll through these 70 pictures:

Son of a bitch, the drone footage of the damage at Mexico Beach is appalling. It looks like the aftermath of the giant tsunami in Japan.

So many homes completely swept away. I hope most people heeded the warnings and got out ahead of the storm.

I just watched the flyover video of Mexico Beach. Wiped-out, down to the foundations. It’s Andrew-esque. Heartbreaking. Awful. Words don’t do it justice.

I hope anyone who lived there was able to evacuate. Google street view it looks like a lot of vacation homes, but I am sure there were residents there.
